Capt. Ron

What else! and don't forget to dock the way he does; keeps the boatyards busy.

Go with Wind, but....

Wind is very good for the sailing, but then you will have to put up with the snooty yacht scene, with a bunch of rich people, or rich wantabes....Yuck. You can go for popcorn during the yuck, and come back to watch the really good sailing footages.

Jean du Sud

You can't rent it, but the film made by Yves Gelinas (inventor of the Cape Horn self-steerer) about his around the world adventure (solo) is unbeatable. You will have to buy it, but it's worth it. It's well done, it's informative, interesting, and true! It's available from Nautical Mind (http://www.nauticalmind.com/customer/With-Jean-du-Sud-Around-the-World-pr-66579.html).

After you rent "White Squall", you will even want to wear your PFD when you shower.

Best sailing movie

This is a really old movie and I am unable to find it to buy or rent. When I was around 12 years old my best friend and I stayed up all night on New Years Eve and this movie came on around 3 AM . The name of the movie is "I sailed to Tahiti With An All Girl Crew". I am not sure, but that might be why as an adult I could not wait to buy my first sailboat. If anyone knows where to find a copy, let me know.

Hey Chief...

Chief, Apparently anything CAN be found on the Internet... Here's the overview for your movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063117/maindetails And believe it or not, if you go to ebay.com and search for "I Sailed to Tahiti with an All Girl Crew" (with quotes) you'll see one copy currently up for bid. Incredible! :) Dave Crowley Wind Dreamer

Faves

Two of my favorites, one of course is Captain Ron. I love when they turn around at the end and head back out there. For that to be me. The other I don't see mentioned ever is Summer Rental. A really fun movie with John Candy and his family renting a house in Florida and John's character learning how to sail from a crusty old salt. Fun watching his teams unlikely win in the yearly regatta beating the arrogant local. Fun movie.

Sailing movie

Message in a Bottle I believe the title is, not for the scenario but for the scenery and boat building, also one cannot forget M & C.

The Calm?

I think the name was "The Calm". Deffinately an Alfred Hitchcock style movie. Tense action.

Wind

By far, WIND is the best sailing movie. The cast is made up of real sailors and while filming the movie, they waited on the weather to give them the effects they desired. No special effects. John

try this link

I Googled "sailing movies" and found this site, among others, from the University of Illinois film school. Some intersting choices there.

movies

I believe the movie starring Nicole Kidman(sp)is called "Dead Calm ".One of the best endings of any movie.Don't let your girlfriend who has yet to go out with you on your boat for the first time watch this or she will never go!! We bought the movie " Visitors' .This is about a women solo circumnavigating and what happens to your mind after awhile.Good to watch on a rainy afternoon. WE WANT PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN PART 2 NOW!!! We will be the first ones in the theater.

One more

There was one other movie I just thought of that should be watched by most Americans. I picked up the movie "Amistad" not knowing what it was about. All of us who saw it saw things a little differantly here in the U.S. Could we please not turn this into a political post?It is most certainly a sailing movie .However I am quite certain it is accurate in it's history.
