What is this?

There is a built up fiberglass "box" on the port side hull of my 1989 36-2 aft of the sail locker. The only thing I can guess is that it is to help stiffen the hull - there are no hoses or wires connected to it. I just bought the boat and am trying to learn everything I can about it but this has me (and my marina staff) puzzled. Does anyone know what it is for and if it is original or a later add on?

You mean the yellow

two tiered thingy in the foreground? Maybe a previous owner was cremated and directed that his ashes be entombed there.

Yes - that's it

It was a one owner boat and I believe he's still alive - don't know about the wife!

That's my answer and I'm sticking to it.

I really think

it was added. The resin is of a different color. And it looks amaturish.

Isn't Pearson out of business?

I thought they closed down about 1991. Ross & Augie, looks like you both have 36-2's, I take it you haven't seen something like this in your boats. Either of you have radar? I'm also looking for mounting suggestions for a 4kw dome. That's why I'm under the transom - considering a bury tube glassed in. Problem is getting access to the starboard side.

Blueyes,

I have an Islander 30. I really don't have a clue about that box like structure. Drill a hole in it and see if you strike oil. ;-)

Could be some internal ballast covered with fibergalss. It may look amaturish but that doesn't meant it's not OEM. Internal ballast like this could have been needed to get the boat to trim on its lines. I know there were some later Pearsons that had this. Not sure which. Dan Pfeiffer

Pearson

I believe that the following is a successor to the outfit that built your boat and operates out of the same place. Who knows; perhaps there is someone there with a long memory. http://www.pearsoncomposites.com/ No, I don't own a Pearson.

Ballast

I'm with Dan on this one; it looks like someone glassed some ballast in place. If you tap it, does it sound hollow?

Pearson

Pearson Composits is the firm created by Everett Pearson and his son. It is an outgrowth of TPI builder (not designer) of J/boats and Freedom, and Alerion and some others as well as other composite structures like bus and train cars, windmill blades and swim spas. Everett started TPI in the mid-60's after leaving Pearson Yachts in about 1965? So all that occured at Pearson after that, including the design of the 36-2 happened without his participation. In the late 90's Everett Pearson bought back the rights to the Pearson Yachts name and they started production of high end motor boats. There is really no connection between the current Pearson and the old Pearson Yachts. Best bet to find out what this thing is on the 36-2 is another 36-2 owner. My guess is still ballast. Drill into it and I expect you'll find some lead. Knocking might tell it's not hollow depending on the quality of the glass work? Dan Pfeiffer

M

much

p36-2

That tells me your boat is a keelcenterboard model and that is added weight in that model.

If, as some suggest

that is ballast, why not replace it with some good batteries and not carry around dead weight?

Much, you know your boats

it is a keel centerboard. How did you know? Extra batteries as ballast sounds interesting...

I have the same structure in my boat....I was wondering the same thing. I thought it may be a counter weight as the batteries, aft water tank and fuel tank are on the starboard side in the aft cabin and this is on the port side....... Greg

It's a base for autopilot.

As best guess of several P36-2 owners I have talked to it is for mounting a below deck autopilot. It is not for stiffening as there is not one on the port side. We have a CB model and friends have the fin keel and a wing keel. All the boats have the same "pedistal".

Base.....?

A base for an old model auto pilot? I have an auto pilot (vintage 1990) and it does not come close to being attached to this structure. As I mentioned in my previous post, is it necessary to counter weight against the batteries (3), water tank and fuel tanks on the starboard side of the boat? That is why I thought this was a counter weight. Greg 1986 P36-2
