I was doing monthly maintenance today and under the engine, in the vicinity of the engine/transmission join, I found a bit of wire that was crimped in led. The wire is clearly broken and has fallen off of something. Is it the ground between the Universal M25 and Hurth transmission? I've looked about, but cannot determine where it came from. Of course, it is next to impossible to look at the port side of the engine, even with the mechanics mirror I used.

its more than likely the seal for the governor screw on the engine assuming you have a yanmar.....don't know if universal has them or not

Yes, a wire seal from something.

Definitely not electrical.

I think Woody has it.. even though you probably have a Universal, it sure looks like the overspeed limiter seal for the governor.

OK, I'm clueless. I've looked through the manual and did a word search in the PDF version I have. No luck.
Does anyone have any pictures or could anyone be more descriptive?

upload_2016-5-1_21-1-21.pngMight be seal, Part # 21 and 22 from the governor of the Westerbeke or Universal. They put them there so they know if someone messes with the high speed limiter.. you cannot buy the part.. Don't worry about it since you are out of warranty..

Take a look at the prop shaft coupler, just aft of the transmission. If I remember correctly there is a square head set screw that secures the shaft to the coupler. It may be a safety wire to prevent it from backing out and/or an inspectors stamp that it was tourqued correctly at the factory.

Your manual and mine appear to be different. See the attached and the unlabeled bolt between part numbers 16 and 17.
If you have a PDF version of your manual, would you be willing to post it?

SimiSAilor,
I will check the shaft coupling the next time I'm on the boat

I thank you both!

That is the first thing that I thought, as it looks just like the one we took of my couple when we did some work to align the shaft a year ago.

if that wire is no thicker than a sewing thread it will not safty much.....it is for indicating if something has been tampered with or changed if it has a lead seal on it ...safety with is a lot thicker ...usually .030 or .040 thick

KZW.. on your drawing/ parts list, right below part #16, there is a stop bolt that has no part number. The drawing shows the seal wire looped through the head of that bolt and shows the lead seal on the wire. It is the bolt that you talk about.. The "Downloads" section of this forum has the parts manuals etc.. My picture came from a quick search of internet for M-25.. there are probably several versions of the governor levers and stop levers..

The wire and seal on the prop shaft is still there, so it must be from the governor.

Is there still a downloads section on the new forum?
