I have no idea why a previous owner made this modification? It looks purposeful and does not look to be a repair to fix something. Any ideas why it was done?

overly large cockpit drain with a rotted & missing scupper flap?

I can't tell if that says EDSC or EDSO...
according to http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/ EDSC could stand for Extended Depth Salvage Capability...

EDSO stands for European Deaf Sport Organization

However I'm guessing it actually reads EDSON and stands for http://www.edsonmarine.com/ and probably had something to do with a self steering system that used to be on the boat.

Edson made a wheel steering installation for rudders hung on gudgeons on small craft. I had something similar on a Catalina 25 but it was by Merriman who went out of business. That looks like part of the wheel steering installation kit.

You silly people... It's a cleanout port. This section of the boat often refered to as the "poop deck".....

No, no..... it's a mail slot, for the postman so he doesn't have to get out of the dinghy to deliver your tax return.

I did find it was a great step up into the boat when I tied the stern line to a tree and dropped an anchor off the front while going ashore at Lake Seminole while we stayed on it for the weekend.
