I have no idea why a previous owner made this modification? It looks purposeful and does not look to be a repair to fix something. Any ideas why it was done?
However I'm guessing it actually reads EDSON and stands for http://www.edsonmarine.com/ and probably had something to do with a self steering system that used to be on the boat.
Edson made a wheel steering installation for rudders hung on gudgeons on small craft. I had something similar on a Catalina 25 but it was by Merriman who went out of business. That looks like part of the wheel steering installation kit.
I did find it was a great step up into the boat when I tied the stern line to a tree and dropped an anchor off the front while going ashore at Lake Seminole while we stayed on it for the weekend.
