Cuz I am pretty sure I watched it last night with my wife. Very pretty sailing scenes but the entire movie was just totally craptastic. I have not cringed that much in a long time. Jennifer Grey and Mathew Modine. They spent some series bank making this movie but it was so totally bad.

Is it the worst ever?

WHAT? You didn't like the WHOMPER? Even as bad as it is, at least it's sailing and not stupid humor of recent films by______(fill in the blank yourself)

I did not know there was still a sailor out ther that had not seen this movie. The movie was first released in 1992 and it depicts the loss and sbsequent recovery of the cup in the 1983 and 1987 races. At the time the story was still fresh and it played well among audiences which had recently become acquainted with the America's Cup. I agree, today the story line is dated and its depiction sucks.

No story was needed, the sailing alone made this movie worth the the price of admission.

They tried so hard to put in this 80s flashdance drama of a dude giving up his girl for his chance on a boat crew and then this far out stuff about building a boat that would beat out the field on a shoe string budget and he wins his girl back from an underhanded dude.... it was like an 80s Urban Cowboy set on the America's Cup. How cool would it have been if they really used the real story.... and kept all the cool sailing scenes!

My wife did name our 150 the Whomper today when we were sailing. We don't own a spinnaker.

First of all they would have DSQed because the oversized "whomper" was an illegal sail which did not conform to 12 meter standards. If you want to see the formula for a 12 meter read Sail Power. It's rocket science. Secondly the Aussies would have just beat the crap out of them for failing to yield. Thirdly Cliff Robertson was a thinly veiled depiction of Ted Turner. Jennifer Grey was cuter before she had all the plastic surgery done on her schnoz. It was fun to watch but still stunk. Fair winds...

Not close to the worst. I have it on my boat and enjoy watching it from time to time. It's dated, but then so am I. Great sailing scenes. Next time, take a look in the credits to see where it was filmed. It was wonderful sailing. FWIW, a past YC member many years ago was a producer. He made some awful sailing movies just to have time to spend on the water. Several are classics today, and, no, I won't mention which one's they are.

You complain about bad sailing movies? What about the bad climbing movies? "Vertical Limit" was filmed on foam sets instead of ice. "Touching the Void" was better, as was "The North Wall."

You're out of your mind! I LOVE that movie.... It's way better than "Capt. Ron" or "Summer Rental" where they used John Candy's shorts as a "whomper" to beat Richard Crenna's yacht on an absolute windless day.

Gotta agree with you on her nose. In fact she had the nose job done halfway through filming the movie, and she and Mathew Broderick were seen in the back of a theater when it first came out. Whenever her face came on the screen they'd be bantering back and forth "Old nose", "New nose"
I remember seeing the movie as part of self made double bill with Captain Ron while at school one rainy weekend.
I agree with another comment, the plot is a bit cheesy, but hey, there's some good sailing there! Also took me back to my International 14 sailing days.

Did someone use Capn Ron in vain in this thread? Stone him!!!

I thought a new movie came out in the last couple of months with sailing as a back drop? Anyone seen it yet?

Yeah, New movie is "Charlie St. Cloud" I haven't seen it yet..not released for rental ..
"Wind" yep a bit cheesy in the script but some neat sailing footage .. nice shots of Newport and the old airport at Wendover, Utah.. same one where "Independance Day" was shot.. The airport is where the crews (ground and air) trained with the B-29's for dropping the bombs that closed the WWII..
Captain Ron is a classic.. Can't diss that one !! "If its gonna happen, its gonna happen out there, Boss"..

Not specifically a sailing movie but had some great shots of a classic woody was "Message in a Bottle". It was so bad it still makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. The only reason I watched it was because it had a pretty sailboat on the dvd cover.

BTW, We started using a kevlar 155% this year in light winds on race night that we affectionately call the "Whomper". So even though the movie sucked we did get a fun term from it.

The regatta in One Crazy Summer was crap, though I loved the rest of that movie. It says a lot about my personality, I guess.

I loved the scenes in Summer Rental, 1, Scully (Rip Torn) breaking into an olde sea chanty and singing the Love Boat Theme LOL. 2, Lightening the boat by throwing Scully's catch of the day overboard in the form of frozen dinners, 3, Richard Crenna throwing a fit because he lost. I've actually seen this happen! Richard Crenna was one of the great under rated actors of our time.
