What is the model name of my O'day?

I'm the proud owner of a 1973 O' Day 23 footer. Is there a cross reference I can use to identify the model name of the boat using the hull number?

First of all, I want to congratulate you on the boat. The O'Day 23 is one of my favorite boats. It's running rigging is set up the way I like for single handed sailing. I also love the cabin arrangement in these boats.

I have an O'Day Format sheet that explains what the letters and numbers mean. I've tried posting it on this site a couple of times with little success. If your O'Day 23 has the letters and numbers embossed into the fiberglass in the upper right hand side of the outside transom, this sheet can help you. Some of the older O'Days had a metal plate with the numbers on them. If your boat has such a plate, my sheet won't help you. It sounds to me like you have the well-named "Oday 23".

I believe Oday only made two boats that were 23' long on deck: the Oday 23 (three different models), and the Oday Tempest. All of the Oday 23's have a stub keel/centerboard configuration. One model had a pop-top cabin, and I believe that all of the early '70's models had the centerboard control cable led to the salon table stanchion. The Tempest was a much more traditionally styled boat, with a short cabin, long cockpit and fin keel. An outboard engine fit in the lazarette. You can check on this site or the I Heart Odays website, but I think the Tempest was made only through the '60's; so if you know your boat is a 1973, it is almost surely an Oday 23.

I've got a metal plate on the inside stern. It shows hull #3062.

I have a '71, class number 115.

The brass plates just have two numbers. Hull number includes all hulls O'Day made. My '71 hull is just shy of 25,000. Class number is the sequence of O23s. Mine is the 115th O23.

I was going to jump in here about the older 2-number ID plates.... but ruidh pretty much said what I would have said. These IDs were used prior to the USCG Required Hull ID number (12-digit, starts with XDY for most O'DAYs, but mid 1980's boats may have STR, or I think another designation).

Everything is functional, but no curtains unfortunately. We will either try to make our own, or pay to have it done. Not sure yet.

I've been restoring it for the last year and just hope to sail it this summer. I re-cored the sole and will be re-coring the cabin top when the warmer weather arrives. It's been a lot of fun so far!

I'm quite sure he did save the patterns. There would still be some customization work to place snaps and the "pull the dot" fasteners, but he'd likely be able to sew the basic curtains and ship them.

Hello Nateman!

We were in a forum back in March regarding the information on the metal plate. What hull number and class number do you have on your '70 O' Day? I'm beginning to believe my 1973 O' Day 23 is older than the title shows. My hull is #3062 with class #354. My plate is on the inside of the stern.

That pop-top setup was the greatest. I remember seeing it at last years rOnDAYvous. It makes the boat for sure because you can stand up in the cabin area.
