Another Seadance moment...... All right guys.. I am obviously a little rusty. I think its called the throttle/control? The part attached to the helm to give it gas when your at the wheel? Went to go clean the boat and start the engine up last week and it started up sweet but I could not get the engine to shut down when I lowered the lever. When I pressed down all the way down ...the darn thing broke half off. I panicked for awhile...hubby was out of range at work, no one at the Marina and the kids were wandering the pier. Checked to see how much diesel I had to sit there and let it burn off on its own but that wasn't about to happen and didn't think it would be good for the engine......full tank. Called girlfriends hubby and he told me to disconnect the battery.. and I'm thinking that won't shut off the engine! So I went down below to the engine and staired at it for awhile and then saw a long lever above the belts and I pushed back on it and there we go... it shut down. When I started it up again... it started again sweet but had to shut it down the same way. How bad is it for the boat to shut it down this way until I get it replaced?? I looked up West Marine's site but they seem to only have lever/controls for motor boats? Can anyonne give me a name and a site where I can get one? I was not happy about this situation at all and it scared the cr*p out of me!! I know your laughing at me;) B/Seadancer

Diesels don't shut off like gas engines

Diesel engines operate on a different principle than gas engines. The only way to shut a diesel off is to cut off either the fuel or the air. Cutting off the fuel is faster, so that is what is done. On your panel, next to the key or starter button is probably a knob to pull that shuts off the fuel. It will probably say STOP on it, or something like that. good luck! Rolfe--Hunter 25.5

fuel shut off

Somewhere on your boat--could be in the cockpit near the guages, or it could be down below near the engine compartment-- is a knob that you pull to stop the engine. It shuts off the fuel supply immediately. Another alternative would be to shut off the fuel supply at the fuel tank, where there is a valve. But the engine would continue to run until all the fuel in the fuel filter and fuel line was burned. You are correct in that disconnecting the battery will not stop the engine. And do not under any circumstances try to shut off the air intake, either with your hand or with a rag. Bits and pieces of either will end up in the engine, and that's not a good scenario.

They are called...

Shift and Throttle controls. Check Defender Marine. I think I saw some there one day.

Seadancer,

We're not laughing at you !! Your insight in shutting down the engine probable makes you a better diesel mechanic than half the people posting on this forum. If your husband hasn't already fixed the broken throttle lever and shown you how to shut down the engine (more easily), ask around at the marina. You need to know the manufacturer of the pedistal/helm and go from there. ps... I bet most of the men out here wish their wives/girlfriends had the insight (about boat problems) that you did.

Shutting off a diesel....

If you cannot shut a diesel down by pulling the fuel cut-off switch at the control panel, or where it connects to the engine, DO NOT disconnect the battery or turn the ignition key switch off. Neither will stop the engine and could do damage to the diodes in the alternator. DO NOT put your hand, or any other body part, over the air intake. Rather, take something like a flotation cushion or something flat and solid and hold it over the air intake to starve the engine of air.

Seadance .... Whats the brand/manufacturer of the engine

If this is a Yanmar there are several options .... and all have to do with the 'idle control', not the throttle lever.

Seadance

Hey seadance give your self a big hand and tell the hubby he owes you a super night out for dinner wine and movie and more. I hate to tell you how many guys would not have a clue how to do what you did,my wife is good at that stuff but not that good. I get crazy when my wife ask all kinds of question's about how things work on the boat cars and other mechanical things and than that's when I say I am sorry and take her out for dinner or what ever she wants for really being so helpful what ever I am working on. So guys don't get insulted for not being handy or maybe you are lucky and have a great $$$$ job and dial the phone instead that is great too. Good luck with getting it repaired but now you can tell your hubby how to stop the engine in an emergence. Nick

Can't tell if your saying the throttle lever or the stop cable pull..

knob is broken. If it's the throttle lever you can get one from Edson.com or Defender Marine.com. and the fuel stop came from Yanmar.com. Just Google any of these sites. Good luck and well done.

Yours is a little different

Seadance, If I remember correctly, yours is different than most. Your throttle and kill are on the same lever. Push the throttle lever down below the idle position to kill it. You didn't hurt it by killing it like you did. Matter of fact, you done good girl. I think you will have to get the lever from who ever made the pedestal. I think yours is an Edson, as it is very similar to mine, and has the same type of control. You may want to add a kill cable that is seperate from the throttle. The kill cable is available from Yanmar, and isn't very expensive. ( Surprise ) Also is not a real big deal to install. I will give you guys a call in a day or two.

Nice and easy is

100% right. Boy my wife wouldn't have figured that out. Good job. It sounds like the kill switch cable needs to be adjusted. Good job! Jim

You Could or Should

Like already said maybe hookup a separate stop cable and don't know what broke but save some $$$ and not have to replace lever or repair if at all possible. Nick

Sounds like you found

a compression/decompression lever down below. Find the fuel shut-off. You are turning into a mechanic! Job well done.

Diesel shutdown

And then there's the Westerbeke way-turn the key to "Off". Nice solution, though, and pertinent comments about not disconnecting the battery. Bill Coxe, O40 Kukulcán, New Bern, NC

Daughter's job

My eleven year old daughter's job on board is engine startup and shutdown. I can never remember which button is the starter and which one is the cutoff, plus I can't read the labels without my glasses. This season I'm adding checking the oil and fuel filter to her duties. Personally though, I'd be happy if anyone *else* in the family besides me started the engine in the off season. :)

Thank you guys

This weekend plan on going sailing. Southeast winds 10 to 15 knots. Seas 2 to 3 feet. Protected waters a light to moderate chop. Temp 80 degrees. Mother AND Father in-law are in town and would like to see the boat. I am going to learn as much as I can about the engine and the mechanics of the boat just in case something ever happens out there and I am left to handle it. Thank you for the pats on the back and info. I can always count on you guys. Good sailing, B/Seadance

You could have...

...cut off the fuel if you loosened the nuts on the fuel injectors. That'll work in an emergency only because it can get messy with fuel.

Throttle & Fuel Shut Off

With the engine off in the slip; If you have someone move the throttle and fuel shut off levers from the helm, while you look at which levers move on the engine itself(at the high pressure pump) , you will find the locations you can use from the engine compartment if the cables were to break. Loosening the injector bolts with the engine running is NOT a good idea for any but seasoned mechanics. Flipping up the decompression levers would be safer, but you are still reaching over spinning alternator and waterpump belts and pulleys.

Maybe?

I plan on an after work sail tomorrow. Remember I told you about my gear set up breaking last summer? The break was inside the throttle clutch ring. When I replaced the assembly I kept the old gear and throttle handles. If you don't mind, I'll board the Gin Mill and see if I have anything that may help you. If you have a "standard" Edson system it shouldn't be too hard to change and we can arrange a time before you go out. Clewless read a couple of engine manuals I have that included your Yanmar. If you want I could also let you read through them before your week-end adventure. You can e-mail me through my Swandriver web site if you read this before tomorrow morning.
