What is a blower

I know this is a really dumb question, but what is a blower? On our 2005 Hunter 41DS's 12 VDC circuit panel, the bottom switch is titled "Blower". But nowhere in the owners manual do they talk about it. What does it blow?

I was going to suggest you turn it on and listen for it but since I know nothing about your boat I'll keep my mouth shut and let the ones that know respond.

That switch turns on the ventilation fan in the engine compartment. Not really necessary for a diesel (required to exhaust any explosive fumes before starting a gasoline engine) . Some use it to help cool the engine when it's working hard and can help if you get a lot of diesel fumes after running. I never use mine.

What does it blow? It blows air.

My guess is it is or was intended for a bilge blower.

I think it was for the engine. I had the breaker but not blower. I installed a blower to help cool my generator and used the blower circuit breaker for that.

It is to cool the engine compartment. It vents on the port side of the cabin aft of the galley window and forward of the cockpit. It keeps the engine compartment heat from seeping into the interior of the boat. I suppose you could use it to keep engine temp lower also. There are no fumes to speak of or bad odors associated with a properly working diesel installation.

Thanks very much. And yes, we have not had any issues with the diesel engine, so I expect we'll probably never have to use the blower.

Blower

I have a blower on my 2007 H-36 and do use it when ever motoring to
suck out any heat from the engine,my engine is right next to my rear berth
and just helps keep heat from entering in to the bed area and my wife said to me once what is the blower for and I said dum me for the engine and ever since has said I should use it or it would not be there so guess what.
I only use it when motoring and when hot here in Florida even leave it on for 15 minutes after shuting off engine.
Check behind engine and look for white flex hose and vent in between walk thru trans for vent, turn on and should hear it for sure.

Probably all of the above. Gave me a thought of cooling down interior on hot becalmed day. I never checked what my blower power source is. "makes a note".

But...

Mine is for the reason in the above link. It meets USCG regs.

Jim...

PS: Your cabin must have a "intake opening" so the blower can exhaust that air. Air OUT must equal Air IN.:)

On the hunter 38 it vents to the cockpit under the helm seat on the port side. Like others I run mine to cool the engine but also when using the propane stove. I have a dripless shaft bearing so my bildge is usually dry. Ocassionally i wash the bildge out and run the blower to dry it. Usually in the summer after several outings when airconditioner condensation water has collected in the bildge.

Got to admit you guys have character, on another forum there would have been dozens of snarky responses. Good show.

It is basically an exhaust fan to ventilate the engine compartment. Its main use is on boats with gasoline engines, to remove any stray gasoline fumes before starting the engine. With a diesel, you don't need it, but it can be used to ventilate a hot engine compartment.
