Universal engine? It is under the altinator on the port side of the engine. Do others look the same (photo attached)? On this 1983 C-30 there is a, (OK I do not know what it is called because I am not at the boat) fast charging system installed. It could be thy changed the alternator but I do not know. Anyway the bracket that holds the alternator is real close to the oil filter. This is my first attempt at removing the oil filter. It looks as though it will unscrew into the bracket but I am not sure because I have not tried it yet. I was wondering if I will need to remove the bracket or if this is normal and it just unscrews and I am worried about nothing. I have not been able to look at any other C-30’s yet. Thanks Chip

belt to small

Chip, Could be that the belt is undersized? If not, worse case is you have to remove the belt and prop up the alternator to get at the oil filter. BTW if you use a large zip-lock bag over the filter when you remove it it will minimize spillage. Good luck!

Mine looks the same

My 84 C30 has a 5411 engine and the oil filter/belt relationship is the same. It is tight, but I don't have to remove the belt. My filter wrench looks like a large pair of channel locks and has worked pretty well. Sometimes you can tear up the filter getting it off. You might try one of the filter soclets that work with a standard rachet. These can be bought at the local auto parts store. Be sure to fit the filter wrench to the new filter. Had the same problem with my daughter's car, could not get to the filter with a standard filter wrench.

Oil Filter

Chip, I have the same setup on my M-25. I bought a nifty little tool that attaches to my rachet and clamps tighter to the filter as I unscrew it from the engine. Once you loosen it, you'll want to put a ziplock baggie around it to catch some of the oil that drips out. One other thing I do to help keep the area oil free is to lay down an absorbant mat under the filter. These are available at your local pet store and are usually used for potty training a new puppy. Good luck,
