Time for a break from my insane schedule so we are fixing to drive down to Frisco to pick up a Hudson force 50 and sail her back up to the yard. She's a bit rough in some spots but not too bad.

Overall:

Interior:

and

Deck:

Bad sprit:

and

I figure we can screw on some plates to hold that sprit together and only fly a yankee in light air. This thing has a big staysail that we can fly when it gets up to 30 knots (which it will).

All in all, a nice escape from my seven day a week two job bullshyte.
Here's a slideshow for those who wanna see more.

PassageWeather is showing a 960 mb low spinning in the Gulf of Alaska that my drop on us. I know we'll get 30+ around Mendicino, never fails.

Nice yacht and the interior is outrageous but with all that woodwork why is there a handsaw next to the helm

Poor old thing. So many of these have become derelict 'live-aboards'. Maybe this one will get fixed up.

I think the saw was just in case the bow sprit needed adjustment or a quick modification

Is the sheer really that pronounced? Maybe it is just the camera angle but it looks like you could slide down the slippery deck.

force 50 decks donot get slick unless one varnishes or cetols the teak. also sheer isnt that pronounced when you are on the decks....

could ye just use forestaysail for much of her work, instead of using jib on sprit--looks like a second bad spot forward of the open one.. that sprit is total toast, looks like.......

please forgive my punctuation being worse than usual--i am using a mexican keyboard and i did something to turn something into no punctuation for me....no question marks or anything----i must splore this....

You take me too literally Zee. But I did view the slideshow and it is definitely "downhill". Not sure I would want to sail her in force 6/7 winds without a good sea trial though. Some of that interior wood is pretty rotten.

mebbe more glue and baling wire.....some bubble gum.........
if it were me sailing her, i would be happier with a downhill run instead of an uphill bashing.i do not envy charlie for that uphill thing. hope her engine works well.....6 horse ob on transom....

We'll polish the fuel before we go. Yeah Zee, I wasn't gonna use the Yankee much if at all unless I'm happy with the sprit. I may replace it onsite.

replacing it onsite wouldnt be that difficult--and would give you better sailing ability--these truly are bricks--force 50 is just a larger formosa 41
lol
captain ron boat..... best re watch that one for instructions on how to properly sail her.
the movie is the owners guide....

let us know how ye liked sailing her when yer done....

How big a role does the sprit play in keeping the mast Up on this boat as it would seem even whan motoring it would get a lot of stress ?

With some rotten wood visible there is probably some hidden. I assume you are taking a good lifeboat and EPIRB.

I don't know yet. Never been on the boat. I'll do my own inspection before we go anywhere. If I have to build another before we go or brace this one, I will.

Looks like you're in for all kinds of fun.
One suggestion, I'm sure you're competent enough for the trip & any repairs, but do bring plenty of Visqueen for tenting the bunks. I am positive you'll get the decks wet & they will leak & a dry bunk ain't nothin' to sneeze @ when you're tired.
Good luck; it should be one delivery which will be a tale worth telling over & over.

I guess you know,

the sprit is mostly in compression if things are tuned properly. Keep it from crushing & you should be fine.

I still think I'd fix it before going north with it.

Looks like its in Glen Cove. You can shake her down a little on the way to the Gate. If its not good, there are lots of yards in the Alameda Estuary. If that is Glen Cove, there is a yard in Vallejo if you want one closer. Last time I was at Glen Cove there were no repair facilities.
