Hudson 50 is a nice boat but I'm wondering about sailing with a sprit in that condition. the ones I've been on all depend on the forestay attached to the end of the sprit and the picture of this sprit suggests significant issues. You can see what I mean about forestay/sprit in pics of another Hudson 50 at http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/13738

Inner stay helpful

Charlie - doesn't sound like a fun trip! A comment about the forestay holding up the rig - looking at one of the slide show pictures there is an inner stay so that should be helpful if the main is reefed and provided that if the sprit fails it doesn't compromise the innerstay deck attach point.

Bowsprit: Never used it before but would something like "Git"-Rot help any on it? http://www.boatlife.com/how-to-git-rot Being up-side-down it would be hard to use but maybe a thin fiberglass shell over the rotten area and then inject the Git-Rot stuff however it is supposed to be done.

Pilothouse windows: Looking at the interior shots, it doesn't look like there is a way to close off the pilothouse cabin from the rest of the inside of the boat. If this is the case then be careful about taking any blue water that will compromise the windows. A couple years ago there was a Hans Christian going down the coast and off the Oregon/California coast they took a hit which broke through the window and it wasn't long before the boat sank like a rock. Well, with all that lead in the keel, probably faster than a rock. The pilothouse cabin was wide open to the inside cabins.

Rudder & Strut: Also several years ago I had my boat hauled out next to a Cal 50 and a recently retired architect and his wife were doing the finishing touches on their boat before they went down to Mexico and the South Pacific. Hummm.... the propeller shaft strut just broke off at the hull surface! It was bronze and old. The flat part of the strut was recessed and puttied over to make the surface smooth. Anyway, it took them a while and a lot of $$$ to get a new part cast and installed. I would say the same thing would apply to any of the rudder parts, too. These would be good parts to check on an older boat or if one takes a chance, do it very carefully. Trouble comes in bunches and one wouldn't want to be going into, say, Crescent City while riding a surf and have "something" go.

Is that a Venus binnacle at the wheel???

Edit: P.S., maybe it was a Columbia 50 vice Cal 50. Probably was.

Hope you have a good trip. I know it will be interesting - guaranteed!

Survey

I certainly trust Charlie's abilities to deal with anything wood, but hope the new owner shared the survey with you. With a bowsprit like that it can only be the tip of the delayed maintenance iceberg!

P.S. Ditto on deadlights for the glass doghouse. A close friend was on a 45 that lost its glass and subsequently had to be abandoned. Google the Almesian for more info.

The most I've seen that boat move in two years was from one side of our marina to the other. You do not have any photos of the top half of the masts and their condition. I do not think you will be sailing... With the weather we have been having you should try going to the Delta and back then you might make it to the Golden Gate. Best of luck.

many parts of these boats that rot take many years. the seas dont usually get as high as the windows, but boards dont hurt-- visibility might be compromised from pilot house thru boards, tho.....as long as the decks are only wet with sea water, shouldnt leak on bedding, but then there are enough places to sleep on one of these boats to sleep an army-- whatever is dry is fair game....'should be an adventure, anyway.... please post many pix..i would love to be able to help with the transport of this boat, but, i must watch mine here in mazatlan....i hope not too much more is damaged besides the sprit--i have a feeling is mostly ok, just a lil botched -- good luck, smooth sailing, and may it be more fun than adventure...

...when he woke up the Alemesian had been rolled and was upside down and all the glass in the pilothouse broke out drowning everything...engine...batteries...thus killing all the pumps except perhaps a manual pump...for a 45 footer.

i presume he had all his sails up and flying, not reefed so as to expect a trouble? is easy to forget, when in a larger sailboat, that momma nature has hger ways of reminding us she rules.
i usually expect larger winds than predicted and i fly reefed sails and leave main down for long passages.
i figure, if htis boat rolls, or gets knocked down, it will sink.
and who was on watch as the boat got into troubles? sounds not like boat fail, but operator fail.....never turn your back on mother nature or the sea.

He sent a mechanic over to do a systems check and run the engine. I'll hear back this morning.
