Hiee,

Anyone else find this hurricane season to be rather strange as to the path most storms seem to be taking? The first 2 tropical named storms happened before the season even began and both veered out into the north atlantic well off the eastern seaboard. Most other storms to date are doing the same thing. I don't think I have ever seen or heard of a season such as this one. Don't get me wrong I AM glad they are following the track that they are but find it kinda peculiar.

Now onto a different topic ie mainsail downhaul. I am thinking of running a 1/4 line from the mast step up to a small block attached to a small shackle in the uppermost lug and then down to a second block in the mast step then out 90 deg to a 3rd block to angle it back to the cockpit. My thinking being that the block up on the sail will allow the load to pull directly down on the sail and prevent any possiblity of jamming in the the track vs pulling only to one side and possible jamming. I don't really need it but I hate having to climb up on the cabin top to pull the last 6 feet or so of the sail down esp. when it blowing kinda hard. This way I can simply step into the cabin and put a temp tie around the sail mid boom to keep it from flogging to much and motor into my slip and then flak it and tie it.

I've grown so accustomed to they're accuracy, I was rather surprised to see NOAA was so far off in predicting Isaac's track. Initial forecast had it running up through Florida, but each new forecast moved it more and more west.

I wouldnt say the weather is so strange as much as the reporting is "off".

if the reporting to which you refer concerns the weather reporting for abnormal humans, yes. i dont listen to those.

storm 2k is a good site to visit for forming storms. nhc also is a good tracker.

I follow the storms via NHC and also the Canadian Hurricane tracking / info site. They have gotten much much better since the blown forcast for Juan in 02. They had forcast that one as a weak cat 1 but when it made landfall it was actually a med cat 2. If Leslie does not deviate from its current track between now and a week this coming Tuesday then it looks like we are in the bullseye again, but then thats a long time out. They use to die out pretty quickly after getting up off the northeastern seaboard but not anymore as the waters are much warmer then they use to be.

just as i thunk--san diego is gonna be new north pole.........at least with a good time length for warning factor, one is able to batten down the boat and neighborhood before anything comes a calling......best safe not sorry --i am still ready for a cat 2....hoping ours continue to head nw.

I have looked into HAARP, but in all honestly it just makes no logical sense and seems more tin foil hat based than anything. What I do look at a lot, is our Sun. Back in 95 NASA put up a European built satellite called SOHO, which looks at the Sun with over a dozen different instruments including doppler shift imaging and is able to get incredible and facinating views and videos. We are now able to watch, for the first time, the myriad of magnetic fields dance and move around its surface.

Spend some time watching SOHO videos, including one that follows the Sun over a 12 year period, starting in 1996, and compare it with global temperatures over the same period. Research the Maunder minimum, as well as the low sunspot count between 2008 and 2010, compared to the Suns activity at present, and try and convince me the Sun doesnt have much more impact on climate than some would like us to believe. While some so called scientists have made the ridiculous claim the Sun has NO impact on our Climate, I would like to see their opinion if it were to die out, or if something pushed us out near Pluto.

I really don't pay much attention to the hurricanes until they start their way up to my neck of the woods in Massachusetts in which case I just pull my boat out of the water and take it home.

On my O'Day 1986 222 "Trinkka" with the Z-Spar mast, I have no downhaul. The goose neck is fixed to the mast. I kind of like this arrangement. The less I need to do in order to get my sail hoisted, the better.

Well now I am becoming more concerned as the track is now showing that Leslie is turning to a north by northeast track. Still along way out but it was originally heading out to sea and away from north america :(.

Trinkka- he's talking about a SAIL downhaul, rigged to the top slide, not a boom downhaul.
Purpose is to pull the sail down when lowering, not as an adjustment.

I use one on my jib, but never have on the main.

Ohhhhhh! I've never heard of a downhaul for a Mainsail. A Jib or Genoa, yes.
I would suggest that she put a few drops of Dawn Liquid Dish washing Detergent on each sail slide and that sail will come down as fast as a shot when the halyard is released. I guess it all depends on what type of sail track she has on her mast though.
Thank you for clearing that up for me. The fog has just lifted. :)

Actually the main drops most of the way one its own accord. Its just the last 7 feet or so that don't want to come down. As I single hand most of the time I'd like to be able to get it all the way down and drop it into the cabin. As it is now I have to climb up on the cabin top in order to reach up and pull down that last little bit. I have slugs with an internal track that they ride in and again they seem to slide easy enough. The sail is just kinda stiff I suppose.
