Wednesday is Photo Day 2025

Mystic Seaport is a fascinating place, and I didn't even begin to poke around to my satisfaction.

There was a fleet of little beetle cats and catboat dinghies that we could take out, so I spent most of my day trying out their variety of offerings on the Mystic River.

A scaled model of the river let's you see how much has changed and what remains the same.

@Will Gilmore Mystic is a fabulous place. Happy to see the photos and that you are able to spend time there. Is the Morgan still there? If it is and you get a chance, I'd love to see photos. It was during the initial restoration of the Morgan that was my first exposure to Mystic.

Yes, the Charles W. Morgan is here. It is currently hosting about 50 or so readers for a Moby Dick read-a-thon. One person reads aloud from the main deck while dozens sit around and follow along in their own books.

My son aboard his Mariner, Borgan Frog, formerly Dragonfly. He did an incredible job fixing what I had left for 10 years in my driveway waiting for me to get to. We became the first father/son duo to attend the annual Mariner Class Association's Connecticut Rendezvous each with our own boats.

I loved that museum during our NorthEastern visit.

I was fighting with my sink faucet replacement. It was not going as smoothly as anticipated. One of my dock mates must have heard me chastising the faucet for being uncooperative. He tapped on my boat and called in, “Hey John, you want to go for a boat ride?” Perfect timing. Yes.
I jumped aboard he’s fishing boat along with another boater and his new dog. I thought we were just going out for a ride and introduce the dog to being on a boat. Clearing the marina the pair of 200hp Suzuki Marine outboards are unleashed and we are shooting across the calm waters of the sound at 35 plus mph. This turned out to be more than a dog orientation.

It included bringing home dinner. On this beautiful sun filled day.

Last week I sailed the Race to Kingston from Mimico Cruising Club in Toronto to Kingston Yacht Club. It's supposed to be downwind in the prevailing Westerlies but we had a steady 15 to 20 knot East wind the entire way, 160 miles beating into it. This was the first race I have been on with my girlfriend, the boat is the First 40 she races on regularly.

Jib sheet winch servicing and re-bedding day(s). Pulled my two Harken 40ST two speed winches today and it was definitely time for servicing, replacement of mounting hardware, and re-bedding. Brought all the bits home and cleaned them up. Will install again on Sunday morning...ocean and mountain sports are my "church".

It's comical both ways.

Got the winches completely cleaned up, lubricated, reassembled and installed this morning. They work and look great. Also rebedded the main sheet track. Used brand new SS316 hardware for all mounting fasteners and butyl tape as the bedding material. Much nicer to work with than 3M 4000 caulk.

One other cool trick with butyl tape is that when you have blind fender washer, lock washer, and nut install that you can only get one hand on - make a butyl tape, fender washer, lock washer sandwich that sticks to the surface around the bolt. You can then easily install the nut without dropping any parts into the depths of you bilge, motor compartment, etc. You only need a few dots of butyl tape on each side of the fender washer to hold it all together and defy gravity.
