The weather report says some major storms are headed for the very spot you keep your boat for the winter. The latest predictions indicate one of the storms has wind gusts topping 85 mph. The forecasters say you might have a day or so before it hits. What would you do? (By Warren Milberg)

First stop would be the Marriot in Annapolis for about 3 strong Pain Killers. After that it wouldn't seem to bad. If I could still move get the boat to a Hurricane hole with good ground tackle. Then go back for some more Pain Killers. Keep boat in the water all year round. Maybe you just gave me another reason to do that.

Been there

Only had my boat for two years, and have had the drill three or four times so far. I am at a dock in a canal a couple of blocks off the intercoastal. The drill is to move the boat to the center of the canal after all canvas has been removed, and the boom lowered and lashed to the deck. (with padding) So far, I have tied to each side of the canal wih four lines. Tying to the dock post on either side. Sustained some damage in Wilma as the boat was only 15-20 feet from my dock, and the force of the wind streched the line enough for the boat to hit the dock. Of coarse, all of this has to be done after all traffic has exited the canal. This is normally by the time the bridges are locked down for the duration.

Winter! What winter?

Do the same thing I would do for a tropical storm. Take down the canvas, take everything off the deck that was loose. Move her several feet off the dock and put on the storm lines - all 14 of them to the appropriate marked spots on the lines and on the deck. We have survived many hurricanes this way.

Not much

I'm on the hard right now and the boat is stored with whatever comes along in mind - I can't do any more to make it secure, except to make sure the jack stands pads are tight, which I do every week or so anyways.

Factory Cradle

She is on the hard for the winter in the factory cradle. Nothing to do there only check the adjoining boats to make sure their okay. After the blow I visit to make sure the winter cover is still secure and adjust as required...... That's It.... See you in the spring.. :)

Warren, When I saw your lead line I wondered if

we were living in the same state. then I saw your picture. We may have gotten a bit more. I think if we go out before noon we may have to brush it of the car.;)

DreamBoat

85 mph is category 1 tropical storm

which Dreamboat has been through 7 or 8 times in the 2 years we have owned her. We keep DreamBoat in a sheltered canal/creek beside our house, so the drill is to tie off to trees on both sides of the canal (minimum of six lines), take down all loose canvas, wrap the halyards around the roller-furled sails, and retire to the house with my friend Jack (Daniels).

Log on the fire.

I would put some more wood in the stove, and look out the window. Our boat is on its trailer out by the barn. garyg

Stay warm...

My boat is on a floating dock right now and I always tie it down in case. I might go put another bow line on but chances are the marina would do it for me so I would be fine!
