I'm a retired weatherman and active sailor. I've been posting various sailing related weather charts to various fora over the past two weeks. Some responses indicate a lack of familiarity or memory about how to read a surface weather chart. Can you read one? By that, for instance, can you estimate the wind speed at any location knowing only the latitude and distance between the isobars? Rich

Last March, my club had Bill Biewenga present us his Weather Seminar. He showed us the maps similar to what you show. Now, I realize that a "refresher" is due. I understand what the large numbers represent (pressure gradients), but how they relate to the others is questionable. Please tell us.

offer a course on weather and their text describes in layman terms how to read the various notations on a weather map. May wish to check for a squadron local to your area and make an inquiry.
