I'm a retired weatherman and active sailor. I've been posting various sailing related weather charts to various fora over the past two weeks. Some responses indicate a lack of familiarity or memory about how to read a surface weather chart. Can you read one? By that, for instance, can you estimate the wind speed at any location knowing only the latitude and distance between the isobars? Rich

Last March, my club had Bill Biewenga present us his Weather Seminar. He showed us the maps similar to what you show. Now, I realize that a "refresher" is due. I understand what the large numbers represent (pressure gradients), but how they relate to the others is questionable. Please tell us.

for paul

Paul Email me via the Hunter owner's directory (I'm the only Rich Kelley in there) and I'll send you a writeup on how to do it...I'd normally post it here, but it involves a diagram which doesn't translate well. Rich

Book

Looking forward to hearing Rich's answer, but it appears that it may not be possible for him to provide it here. Strange! Does any one have any recommendations for a basic book about weather, written for sailors in North American waters, that would cover topics like this?

strange but true

I have yet to figure out how to integrate text and diagrams in this forum. Hence my earlier reply. For a useful link on a broader topic, you may want to check this out...

The US Sail and Power Squadron's

offer a course on weather and their text describes in layman terms how to read the various notations on a weather map. May wish to check for a squadron local to your area and make an inquiry.
