Having just paid to have my teak stripped and re-done with Cetol, I'd sure like to delay having to repeat the process any time soon. The person who did it said that it's necessary to do a light sanding and re-coat about once a year if I want to avoid having to strip to bare wood again. It seems to me that if waxing fiberglass retards UV damage that the same might be said of woodwork. Has anybody ever tried putting wax on teak with a Cetol finish to see if it helps? Any other ideas to delay its degradation apart from putting custom canvas covers on it?

I wouldn't, but...

It probably won't hurt it. But you would have to strip the wax off before recoating, and that sounds like a PITA to me. Why don't you do the work yourself? It's not that difficult. Probably a time issue?

Cover it with Sunbrella!

Just have some Sunbrella covers made for it. It will last for many years before even recoating that way.

CETOL IS WONDERFUL

IF THE CETOL IS APPLIED RIGHT TO BEGIN WITH IT IS VERY EASY TO MAINTAIN. ON MY 30' BOAT IT TAKES LESS THAN 1HR/YEAR MAINTANCE. THATS LESS TIME THAN I USED TO SPEND TAKING COVERS ON AND OFF. THE SANDING IS QUICK AND MINIMAL. THE NEW COAT DOSEN'T REQUIRE MASKING BECAUSE I JUST WIPE MY MISTAKES OFF THE DECK WITH A RAG. I LIKE THE COLOR OF THE CETOL MARINE LIGHT. WAX WON'T HURT THE CETOL BUT WHY BOTHER? IT HAS TO COME OFF FOR THE RECOATING. I'LL BET YOUR WOOD LOOKS GREAT NOW, GOOD LUCK.

You'll still need to re-coat

You'll still need to re-coat at some point and when that time comes it will be VERY difficult to remove the wax without a de-waxer and sanding. If you use any product containing silicone (which is most marine wax except Colinite & Tre-Wax) you will NEVER get good adhesion because De-Waxers do NOT remove silicone only wax. A thorough sanding will remove silicone as long as the silicone did not penetrate the porous wood surface because of a scratch in the Cetol surface. Two year ago my boat yard had to replace 70% of the teak on a brand new Sabre because the moron "new boat/first boat owner" thought it would be a good idea to put Armour All on his brightwork. The silicone in it penetrated the finish, and then the teak, causing the varnish to lift in half a season. After taking of an 1/8 of an inch of teak through multiple sandings the varnish was still fish eyeing so the had to replace it. Cetol = Good Waxing Cetol = Bad Any silicone based product & boats = Bad Silicone & Bathtubs = Good

Horror story

A.C., I've heard some horror stories before but yours is near the top of the list. I can't imagine what a nightmare it must have been to replace most the teak on your Sabre. Despite my years of sailing and maintaining boats, it scares me that I'm still as dumb as a post. I'm the sort of guy who would have thought that something like Armour All wouldn't have been as stupid an idea as it obviously is. Thanks for all the input, guys. It appears the answer is just to recoat it once a year.

cetol maintenance

you can recoat the cetol in 1/4 the time it will take you to wax.... the whole point of cetol's popularity is the very low yearly maintenance involved. Cetol's biggest complaint is its orange color... and that objection seems to be diminishing with the cetol light product.
