Waterproofing prior to painting

I am stripping all things off the boat preparing it for paint. It's probably going to take me several weeks to finish stripping, sanding, repairing deck hardware holes, and painting before I'm ready to put deck hardware back on the boat. What have people been doing to seal up the hardware holes prior to working? I'm thinking just some clear packing tape since it's probably going to more watertight than the hardware that's on there right now. Any suggestions? I'd rather not tarp it since I know I'm wearing my neighbor's patience thin as it is right now.

Duct tape.

The real stuff, silver with a peel-off paper backing. I find that it really seals and does not leave a glue residue like the gray tape that some people call duct tape. When I had my portlights out I used it with clear painter's tarp cut to fit the cutout. Not a drop of rain came into the cabin. And I still had plenty of natural light for inside work.

is on to something! You can get that at HD I think. The shiny silver foil with pull off backing... for ductwork... or aluminum faced insulation. I learn something new every day here.

Why do you need to do that?

If you are expecting rain or heavy dew, then cover the boat with plastic and tarps. Blue tape is ok for masking of wood that you don't want paint on. if paint gets in the screw holes it'll make the screw hold better, especially if it's polyurethane. You want the surface you are going to paint to stay as dry as possible.

Thanks Ed, I've got some of that tape. I remember reading something about ductwork and tape that was acceptable to use. Turns out that almost any other kind of tape worked better than the stuff typically called "duct tape". Like I said, I'd use a tarp if I was sure my patience wasn't wearing thin with the neighbors. I think the real duct tape might work out fine.

we just put a small blob of silicone in the holes and plucked them out when we were ready to put back together. Good luck
