I'm wondering if anyone else has made a similar observation, or could give me some suggestions. I just bought a 99 mk2 that was hauled out and winterized before I signed the papers a couple of weeks ago. On that day, I sponged out an accumulation of about an inch of water from the chamber under the wooden board under the aft berth, on the starboard side. It did/does not appear to have any way to run to the bilge. When I visited again this weekend, it was again filled - this time with a 2 foot long chunk of ice, which I removed again. There is no other sign of leakage in the cabin at all. Is it possible that water leaks in from the deck through the steering column and then forward? Is there anyplace for water that ends up here to go?

MK II what

It would be helpful to know what kind of boat you have. Take some bright colored chalk with you the next time you go to the boat. Draw a line or lines on the inside of the hull above where you found the water. The next time it leaks, you'll have some indication of the direction the water is coming from.

chalk on fiberglass gelcoat?

Sorry John - I thought my user profile shows that I have a 28 mk2. I'll see if I can add that information. The aft berth of the '99 28 mk2 seems to be a shiny fiberglass gelcoat like the exterior of the hull- your suggestion sounds good, but I don't think chalk can write on that surface (?). I'll consider another material will serve the same purpose...

i don't know if this helps

i just found water was coming into the aft berth on my '78 cat. 30. it was running off the cockpit seats onto the throttle, gear shifter. running along shaft of the shifters into the port storage area and dripping down the wood wall which separates the storage area from the aft berth and then into the berth. your setup is probably different but you may want to look for something like this.

I too found water

I also found some water in the same location. I sponged it up and did not think too much about it. Keeping close eye on it, I soon realized that it only appeared when I spent anytime on the boat. (Tasting it suggested fresh water.) The periods at dock with no use did not produce any water. I soon realized that it only appeared after weekends spent on the boat using the pressurized water system. After tracing it as far as I could, I realized that the only possible source would be the plumbing or the hot water heater just behind the aft bulkhead. It was running from the port side to center and then under the bulkhead. In my case I found a leaking fitting on one of the many hoses in the bilge. It was just a drip but still water. I don't remember if it was a coupler, elbo or T fitting. I tightened it up with a screw driver and all was well. In the past, I have had to replace old fittings that seemed to become egg shaped and just would not seal under the hose clamp. I hope that helps. I have a c-28 mkll 1997.

Water under the engine

I just purchased a Catalina 270. Water is collecting in the bilge under the engine. It is coming from the packing gland. I get about 3 drops per minute. If this small bilge would drain into the sump where the bilge pump hose is, everything would be fine. I'm concerned that the cabin carpet will be soaked if I don't get to the boat every few days. Is there any good way to get the water from this little bilge into the one where the pump hose is, or do I need to tighten the packing nut? Bill Evans Pneuma

Bill, there are 2 very small weep holes in the

small stringer at the forward end of the area under the engine that allow this water to drain to the bilge. The holes are towards the port and starboard ends, not near the center, clear them with a piece of baling wire or such.
