Chris, you are correct; I meant that as an emergency-only thing where ya open the faucet then turn the switch on then switch off before the faucet is closed. yes, a pain, but you could have water without a manual pump.
I guess I am surprised that Jabsco is not fixing this by supplying a retro fit pressure switch to make it like they used to be.

It sounds like 2 separate problems with the pump. The pump coming on with no water use is usually a leaky check valve in the output of the pump. The overcurrent is interesting in that you said it's connected to a 10 amp breaker and it's rated for 12. If it's rated for 12 amps, it should be on a 15 amp breaker. Just make sure the wiring is up to the load. To test it, jumper the breaker with an in-line fuse (preferably with an ampmeter in series with it.) Was this pump recently replaced? Is the boat new to you? some history may be nice.

Thermal circuit protection (fuses, breakers, etc) should be run below 80% of their rated capacity or so. A 12 amp device on a 10 amp circuit won't do.

I did install the VSD, a Chinese made west marine brand for which I paid way more than it was worth. Don't expect long life. Next will be a good pump with accumulator tank..
One cool discovery made While tracking down leaks in my freshwater supply I did discover that between the on and off valve and the freshwater tank is a capped off hose that is run to just underneath the galley sink. Bye reattaching that to the hand pump that is stored in the locker will allow me to get freshwater if the pump fails.
At least I learned a lot about my freshwater supply system and freshwater pops and will be better prepared for the next issue I have with either of those systems.
Thank you for your help

When I bought my Hunter new in 2004 it had one of those pumps. Failed in its second year (fortunately I caught it before I left the dock as I was headed to Catalina). After reading all the reviews on them I elected to go with a standard pump and a large (2 gallon) accumulator tank. I'm actually much happier with that setup.

Boy you guys saved my hide again. I'm going to put in a fresh water system and was about to start gathering the parts, and was going to use one of the variable pumps, but not now.
