Water pump housing

I just replaced my impeller on a Universal Model M-12. I noticed a small hole in the housing near the botom mounting bolt that has a slight drip. The hole doesn't really look like a pin hole but could be easily repaired. However it really looks like it has always been there. Is this possibly a weep hole or a screw missing? Does anyone have any input?

I am not familiar with the engine, but I have never heard of a weep hole in a water pump - but maybe it is supposed to be there. Be interesting to watch this thread.

There usually is a weep hole or an opening in the pump case just behind the seal.. It tells you that it is time to change the seal before the leak gets bad enough to let water get back to the bearings and/or into the engine. Sounds like it is time to change your seal.. check the shaft for wear where the seal rides while you are rebuilding .. Good Luck with it, Ron.

See the link below and you may consider replacing the Sherwood pump with the Oberdorfer pump. Some modification is required depending on the type of Universal you have.
Installing a new Oberdorfer was not so complicated.

Raw water pump weep holes

You betcha there ARE weep holes. That's why they are there.

Click on the embedded links in those posts. Sherwood? Why bother? The Oberdorfer parts are soooo much less expensive. Gee, plus you can service them.

Most automotive type pumps I have seen have the hole there as a tell that the pump ios starting to fail at the seal and may need replacing soon.

My Sherwood pump has a weephole between the water seal and the oil seal. If water is dripping out, then your water seal is worn and needs replacing.
