water in fuel

I have a 1977 C30 that was repowered about 10 years ago with a Universal 3 cylinder diesel. We started the boat and ran it for about 15 minutes (out of the slip, out towards the bay) and noticed the fuel cap was sitting on the deck. We have been having a lot of rain lately, and the fuel gauge now reads "full" (compared to "3/4" a couple of weeks ago). The engine started and ran fine. I would appreciate any recommendations on what steps should be taken to avoid any long term damage.

Some Thoughts

If you think you have a quarter of tank that is now water I think you have no choice but to have the tank drained completely. Regards John Just Add Wind

If you think you have a large quantity of

water in your fuel tank, you have the choices to make. It's either depend on the filter/water separator to get the water out or have the water go through and blow up your engine! :) Seriously, water isn't good in diesels, so if your separator is showing evidence of lots of water, then get the water out of the fuel tank. Since the diesel fuel oil and water don't mix, you could try pumping the water out (I forget which is heavier, but someone will chime in).

Water is heavier

I had water in my fuel and pumped it out from the disconnected fuel, line just before it reached the filters. Good luck and merry Christmas. Arturo

Water is heavier

and as a result the water should remain on the bottom of the tank and in the separator as well. Water has a Specific Gravity of 1 at 60 degrees F where diesel has a Specific Gravity of 0.82+/- at 60 degrees F. Thus it floats. There should be a petcock on the bottom of the separator to drain out the water????? As far as the tank try sucking the water off the bottom without stiring the tank. Good Luck.
