If you decide to do any upgrades or reconfiguring of the fill scheme, consider copying the factory stock fill on our boat. Since our main water tank is under a settee (lift up a cushion, and see an access port to unscrew thru a circular cut-out in the cover board), that is how we fill the water tank. Seemed odd to me when we bought the boat over 20 years ago, but liked it better and better almost immediately, and still like the concept.
To fill the tank, I drop a charged hose with a small valve on the end down the vent hatch. Insert it into the "fill and inspection" port and fill the tank up. Works a charm -- no spill and no (zero!) way to ever have contamination or other fill hose problems with a typical deck fill. No deck fill key to lose, either.
I could envision this working just as will for a forepeak water tank under those cushions.

Loren
ps: to the OP: smashed any knitting mills lately?
