Water fill location

I have been reading through old posts here over coffee. My boat has the water fill deck fitting in the bottom of the anchor locker, it looks like Hunter and some others used the same practice. WHY would any designer do this? I need to pull my anchor rode to access the potable water fitting which is sitting under anchor muck, gross! Looks like another project on the list.

That does not sound logical, Mr. Spock said. Are you sure that's what it is? I'll be glad to get other input on this.

I think you may have answered your own question?

When I was a roofer in another life, we'd sometimes come up against architectural anomilies that mirror your problem. Valleys leading into walls, for example.
We would attribute these design flaws to "architects on drugs", and they made for some challenging workarounds on our part. Or job security for the roofers hired to fix what the original roofers could not.

I admit that's an odd design. My Hunter is also in the locker, but on a ledge above the rode. Very easy to get to.

Hello Nedd Ludd,

Our Caliber 28 has the water fill in the anchor locker. The fill cap is somewhat higher than and aft of the anchor locker drain hole. It works OK because our water storage tank is under the V-berth directly below the anchor locker. With a large anchor locker and its accompanying large lid the fill cap is easy enough to reach and use. I usually sit aft of the locker with my feet in the locker itself. Of course it does require removing some items like the fenders I keep there, but I am satisfied with the need to check into the locker from time to time whether we anchor or not. That encourages me to keep it clean. Rinsing the anchoring equipment as it is stowed also keeps the locker clean.

My previous Hunter 280 (1996 I think) had the water fill in the anchor locker. It was up high above the rode. Usually just sprayed around it before taking the plug out to fill.

On my O'Day 322, it is on the deck, and not much cleaner.

If you decide to do any upgrades or reconfiguring of the fill scheme, consider copying the factory stock fill on our boat. Since our main water tank is under a settee (lift up a cushion, and see an access port to unscrew thru a circular cut-out in the cover board), that is how we fill the water tank. Seemed odd to me when we bought the boat over 20 years ago, but liked it better and better almost immediately, and still like the concept.

To fill the tank, I drop a charged hose with a small valve on the end down the vent hatch. Insert it into the "fill and inspection" port and fill the tank up. Works a charm -- no spill and no (zero!) way to ever have contamination or other fill hose problems with a typical deck fill. No deck fill key to lose, either.

I could envision this working just as will for a forepeak water tank under those cushions.

Regards,
Loren

ps: to the OP: smashed any knitting mills lately? :)

I have to admit I like that moniker also. Every time I have a computer problem I hand my laptop to the IT dept and state that I am a Luddite. No response from them.
