Hi All,
I'm trying to replce my holding tank and associated hoses. While I'm at it, I want to replace the broken (permanently open) gate valve which I believe is original equipment on a 1979 Hunter 33. After some thirty years, the valve seems to corroded right onto the thru-hull. As I tried to loosen the valve, the whole thruhull assembly turns.
My first attempt at a solution is really loading it up with lubricant. I can't remember the name of the stuff, but it was recomended on this site and it cost about $15 a can (orange label). In the past this stuff has worked wonders, but I'm a little doubtful about this one. I'm letting soak in overnight and will give it another go in the morning.
Another idea I had was to take a hacksaw to the thruhull and replace the whole package. Unfortunately, there isn't enough room to use a hacksaw on it.
Any suggestions? I would really like to be able to close this valve.
Thanks

Wow I hope..

Wow I hope you are not in the water because you've just broken the seal between the hull and thru-hull fitting.

It probably won't be a gusher but it will most likely be a leaker. You'll require a haul out to fix this..

no, out of the water

Luckily we're out of the water. I must admit the first thing I thought of when I saw that backing plate start to rotate was "there's another thing to do!"

The advise that Mainesail gives on this subject

is as good as you can get. Gate valves have no place on boats.

Follow advice from this board.

There is some very good advice on this board about this subject. Ross and Mainesail have already told you the truth. If the thru hull turned, the seal is broken, and it needs to be replaced. And as per Ross, gate valves have NO business on a boat. There is some really good information, instructions and pics on Mainesails website. Give it a visit, and you will learn all you need to know.

replacing gate valve with seacock

I know that about gate valves which is another reason for switching it out with a real seacock.
But the problem remains, how do I get the stupid thing off??

Uh, Ross, ...

May I suggest revising your statement,
"Gate valves have no place on boats", to
Gate valves have no place on boats, as seacocks. As valves in your freshwater system, or fuel lines, they are quite acceptable. :)

I will just be the first to say there is a tool

for holding a thru-hull from the inside of the fitting while you turn the attachment (Gate valve).

Buck , But why would you want one? You can't tell by looking if they are on or off. They take several turns to open or shut.

Buck I have to disagree

with you on this one. I can think of no system where I would want a gate valve on a boat. They are not nearly as reliable as a ball valve. I cannot even comprehend using one of them in the fuel system, and don't think I ever have. capejt, lots of ways to go about this. I would suggest first trying to get someone on the outside to hold the flange and try to screw it off. Second I would suggest a Makita angle grinder with a cut off wheel on it, and just whack the whole thing off, and push it out. If you can describe the situation better, or some pics, you will get lots of free advice. One thing is for sure, soon as you get it out, you will come up with a much better way to do it. Aren't sailboats fun.

Cut it, you can't use it anyway.

Cut it off with a carbide wheel, you can't use the thru-hull anyway. The Cherubini's used 1/2" thru-hulls and you cannot buy a real seacock smaller than 3/4". So you will need to replace the thru-hull. I did the engine and head intakes on my H37C. You will need to plug the old hole so that you can drill a new 3/4" hole. Makes for a lot better and safer setup.

Well...

For fuel lines, at least to be up to ABYC standards, gate valves are not acceptable.. Fresh water system it really does not matter as much but why use a gate valve when a ball valve is so much cheaper these days....??

Give some thought .

to trying a spud wrench, after a good soaking with Kroil oil. I used one on my hull fitting and it worked fine. Use the spud wrench from the outside and have somebody inside to remove the ring nut.

Been there done that

For the amount of time your going to spend trying to get this valve off the thru hull, just cut it off and start fresh with a new thru hull and valve, cause after you get the valve off now ya got to get the nut off the thru hull to redo the seal
And BTW I'm a big fan of Kroil this stuff blows away any and all penetrating oils

I Don't

Like to use Gate valves on dry land, much less around a boat. I'll take a ball valve any day of the week over a gate valve. I haven't seen the gate valve yet that doesn't fail.

Is the stuff you were wondering about called "PB Blaster or the Kroil?"

Good Luck

Buck, Every time I did a search for "spud wrench"

I was shown steel erectors hand tools. So then I did a search for thru-hull tolls and got this very interesting series of tools.

yet another update

Okay, first of all, it IS Kroil that I couldn't remember the name of.
Also, I guess you're right, RAD, I hate the thought of the extra effort involved, but I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do the thruhull too.
I really thank all of you for your responses. There sure is a lot of help availble here as I have seen over and over again for several years. I wish I could post a picture or two, but my digital camera decided to die on me last week.
I guess it's off to Defender in the morning for a new thru-hull and seacock, and perhaps a stop at Home Depot for an angle grinder and cut off wheel.
Again, A thousand thank yous!!!
