Yesterday I was replacing the furler drum on my 85 C27. I assume the Hood 710 line drive furler was original equipment and I wanted to change it with a Hood single line which I had acquired. After securing the mast with a spare halyard I removed the drum and couldn't believe what I found. The lower extrusion section which attaches to the drum was cracked approximately 90% around the extrusion. This was certainly an impending failure. I can't imagine what could have happened if it failed while reefed during a blow, unexpectedly launching the 150 genoa. Anyway, I thought I should share this...

had the same thing happen on a Hunter 27...

if fact, the foil completely failed. We were able to furl the main with the furling line as usual since the sail is attached to the drum. It did not furl up neatly, but it did furl. I'm going to check mine this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.
