Please reply to the author's email address; our forum policies do not permit boats to be advertised in the forums. Thanks! ph.

Boats wanted

Phil, This is the second boat wanted posting in a few days. It seems to me that the policy is uneven. A posting for a boat for sale is promptly removed. Seems like a posting for a boat wanted should be removed also. Perhaps space for the same should be in the classifieds along with those for boats for sale. Just my opinion. Fair enough

Comments anyone? Should boats wanted be removed from the forums and added to the classifieds? Personally, I like that idea. what do you think?

Reasoning

Phil, The thinking behind my suggestion was just a feeling that commerce is commerce. I'm not sure that I understand how wanting a boat to buy is really different from wanting to sell a boat from a policy standpoint on the forums. Both parties are interested in a transaction. And, if you are looking to be consistent in promoting the boats for sale classifieds, it seems inconsistent to allow boats wanted in the forums. In that instance, I might be better off just responding to the forum requests rather than running in the classifieds. What can be a better lead than someone who is already professing an interest. In fact, maybe I can convince them to buy my boat rather than the specific model they have indicated. Because you sell products that compete in the industry you have carefully crafted policies regarding the nature of postings. Liberal policies, I might add. However, I suspect if I posted a request to buy something you sold on the site as an open invitation to competitors, it would be inappropriate. It is equally inappropriate to allow a boat wanted post to do the same in relation to the paying members who advertise in the boats for sale part of the classifieds. My expanded thoughts. Thank you very much for the thoughtful way this site is run, regardless of my opinions. There is more information generated here than any other single source I'm familiar with. Sounds Good in Theory

Posting a boat in the Classifieds sounds good in theory, except, like this request, the person is ostensibly open for other models and isn't locked on to just this one model. So the question then would be how to list the "wanted" ad? Editorial Comments: 1. If you’re trying to make money on this site it would be good to have a Boats Wanted section but I doubt it would generate much revenue because there would be few buyers willing to fork out the bucks for an ad, at least as compared to someone who wants to sell a boat. 2. Many people looking to buy a boat also will own a boat they need to sell. Indirectly one could generate revenue if those people advertised their boat for sale here. 3. Putting a Boat Wanted in the discussion forums is not very efficient because in a few days it’s not readily visible. Also, like Daniel inferred, it sort of muddies the question about writing a post with a boat for sale. My vote would be for a section Boats Wanted under the Boats for Sale tab.

Here's an idea

We set up a Boats Wanted section in the classifieds. Of course, it would post the search on a web page. But as an option, it would also email everyone selling that model in our classified ads, notifying them of the search. It would continue to automatically monitor the classifieds, notifying new sellers about the potential buyer. That would need to be optional, of course. The buyer would be able to set parameters like region, price range, years, etc. Could be kind of neat! p.

Phil, further to your idea

How about having system email all owners from the owner's directory, maybe in a defined geographic area? Most boats are always potentially for sale. If someone in my area is looking for my model, I'd be glad to talk to em. My 2 cents...

Privacy issue

There's a privacy issue there, but it's not insurmountable. Everyone in the directory could be asked first if they want to receive those mailings. A positive response would put them on the lists. Good idea!
