Volvo Shaft seal

Anyone have experience with this leaking. I have seen it recommended to put Lithium grease under the shaft seal, and to squeeze water out of the tube but the tube is hard plastic and has not flex. .
There is a space between the plastic cap and shaft where one could sqeeze some grease in, where the shaft goes forward toward engine.

Leaking I would definitely pay attention to. As I understand it, the maintenance grease goes in under and just past the lip. The technique I've read about and used is to put some waterproof grease in a drinking straw then flatten one end, slide it under the lip a bit, and squeeze the grease inside.

The leak was bringing in about two or three cups of water with motoring about 1.5 hours for a few months. Now it seems to have abated down to maybe 1/16 of a cup in same period. but I will try the grease. I am due for haul out next week anyway and will be able to check it. If defective I think I will go to a PSS Dripless SS. They seem to be more highly regarded.

I didn’t have a straw onboard, but was able to use a small piece of heat shrink tubing.

Verify if the motor mounts have not moved/misadjusted. My Volvo seal leaked about a gallon per hour after owning the boat for two seasons. On launching the next season, I found the lower nut had loosened on one rear mount. re-adjusted and problem went away.

Dont use lithium grease - I did and it hardened!! Get that Volvo grease for $10 for 2 OZ!!

Use Volvo grease, burp right after launch. The Volvo shaft seals are very reliable!

As said, you have to burp the seal... not the tube. And only put a small amount of grease in... to much will clog things. I use the Volvo grease..... My boat had the original volvo seal that was 16 years old and did not drip a bit. However I had to do some work on the shaft and figured I would replace with a new volvo seal which was a breeze. They are simple and work great..... not a single drip.

The genuine Volvo grease is less than $1 per year from my experience.

I’ve been using Lubriplate 130AA to grease the seal. I use it on my Maxprop. It is waterproof. I haven’t seen it harden and haven’t had any problems.

Just received a couple of tubes of the Volvo grease... under $15 CDN each. Saw an Amazon seller listing same for $76/tube!??!

Thinking now that it must be a whole case of tubes for $76… doesn’t say but shipping weight (over 2kg) would indicate. Lifetime supply?
