I am looking to buy a Hunter 420 or 450. Any comments on pros and cons of a Volvo vs Yanmar diesel? It appears that Hunter drop the Volvo .... does anybody know why?

Why?

Cost and availability of parts. Also, I don't think that they were well received by the buyers since most of them were upgrading from a smaller Hunter that had a Yanmar that had probably given excellent service.

I prefer Yanmar

We have a Yanmar (4JH2-THE) in our 460 (2000). Absolute great performance, very efficient and operates with a clean run. Maybe the “outside” finish of the engine block doesn’t satisfy perfectionists (they paint EVERYTHING in gray, even oil filter and hoses!!!), but fuel consumption and performance will convince you. Volvo engines are great deal for powerboats (esp. commercial). I had for 5 years in my former boat a Volvo-Penta engine. Actually the finish and appearance is fantastic. It had a smooth performance and a remarkable economic consumption. But service and parts are insane. B-O-A-T! (Break Out Another Thousand!) From my personal perspective I found more Yanmar dealer/service stations here on the west coast. Service is affordable and most of the tune-ups can be done by yourself (but do it!!! The engine will thank you grateful in a long lasting life) All full ahead! Wil

$50 with a Volvo

I have a Volvo TMD 22 in my Passage 450. The engine has given very service so far. It is quiet and appears to run and start well. I notice it tends to smoke a little. I have asked the local mechanic about this. He says it is common for the Volvos to do this. The major problems have been: 1. Part are way too expensive - It boarders on the ridiculous. 2. No qualififed (by Volvo) mechanics in Marina del Rey to service engine 3. The harness and electrical is made very cheap. I have already been through one set of guages and am ready to replace another set (boat is only four years old. The ignition is also about to go. I can get the boat started but can't get it shut off using the ignition key. 4. I also had a problem with the turbo. The engine burns about 2.5 gal/hour running at 2800-3000 rpm. Therefore, I tend to slow down to 2200 RPM on long hauls (1 gph). We tend to use the boat as a long-distance cruiser. However, I carboned-up the turbo doing this and ended up having to have it repaired/cleaned. I was told subsequently, I can avoid this problem by running the engine at 3000+ RPM for 30 minutes every 4 to 8 hours. 5. My experience has been that customer and service should not be used in the same sentance when referring to Volvo-Penta. Its not that the service is bad - there just doesn't seem to be any service. Bottom-line, Hunter made a good decision to drop the Volvo. I like the Volvos performance but would definitely purchase a Yanmar the next time.

Are Yanmar parts really more reasonable?

I have a MD22L in my 1997 40.5. The engine runs great, but it does smoke. This is my second engine, the first replaced for smoking under warrantee. Now I have a chronic problem with raw water pumps and coolant caps. 4 months of use (100 hours) and they leak. My local Volvo dealer felt bad for me when Volvo told me to buy my own pump and cap the second time. The first pump failed in warrantee on the second engine. This second pump failed in the second year, 4 months out of warrantee. Anyway the dealer gave me the pump at his cost $196.41, list price of $280.59. The coolant cap cost me $24.14 with a list of 34.49. Can you imagine a radiator cap for 34 bucks?!! Yes, I think this is still way too high, but doesn't Yanmar stiff everyone just as much? Volvo is going to hear from me on this, but I doubt they will budge. BTW, is there anyone but me that thinks a 1 year warrantee on a $10K engine is totally inadequate? In the north, that one year is really 5 months of use. Rich

Yanmar Designed for Sailboats

We have a Yanmar on our 450 and are very pleased with it. We also had a Yanmar on our Hunter 37.5 and were very happy with that as well. I probably don't have as many years experience as most, but like everybody, I have an opinion. I saw one Volvo in a 450 and didn't like what I saw. It could have been as much to do with owner maintenance as the design and reliability but there seemed to be signs of several oil leaks and water leaks. Also, I've been told by several people, far more experienced and knowledgeable tham I, that Yanmar is the only diesel that was designed specifically for the marine environment and sailboats. Mainly, our experience has been very positive and we're very happy we have a Yanmar. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks

Thanks for the comments... I'm thinking that Yanmar is the way to go. I assume that Hunter used the Volvos on some of the '97 models and went back to Yanmar after that?
