Very hard to turn wheel steering on a 1987 Pearson 27

My P27 is equipped an outboard rudder controlled with a standard Edson wheel assembly which drives a converter box via two flex cables. The converter box has a lever arm which extends out the stern and drives the rudder via a 2 foot long rectangular bar. Has anyone serviced or have any info of , what I'm calling, this converter box. It's bolted to the interior of the stern. I'm planning to disassemble the converter to determine why it's so very hard to move. The problem may also be in a section of the two drive cables , which are encased in a what appears to be a BX outer sheath.
Thanks
Chris

good question, but wheel lock was not on.
The P27 manual states that information for the optional wheel steering is provided separately in the manufacturer's brochure at time of boat purchase. Looking for someone who might know the name of the manufacturer of the transom mounted actuator, as I will likely have to rebuild it.
thanks for your comment.

A friend of mine had the same problem.
It turned out to be the needle bearings in the steering mechanism were very dry / there was no lubricant left.
We bought the rebuild kit from Edson.
Six hours later all good.
You might be able to force some of the synthetic lubricant into the holes meant for lubricant. That might save you from having to replace the bearing.
By the way - removing the three screws under the compass was a real PITA. We used some PB Blaster and a Dewalt impact driver. We alternated CCW then CW , back and forth.
Let the PB Blaster soak a while , maybe overnight. Give it a chance to do its thing.

Edson technical support is excellent, I recommend calling them and asking for help and advice.

Did you ever get this resolved? I had the same problem on my 1988 P27. I even bought new cable runs thinking that was the issue. But I decided to try spraying some cable lube into the old cable runs and also make sure there were no excessive bends in the cable runs. Also lubed every place I could find.
That was a few years ago. Haven't had a problem since.
