DAVE MARKS

I SAIL A 1984 C27 TALL RIG. WHEN ON A PORT TACK THE SINK IN THE HEAD FILLS WITH WATER. MY BOAT HAS A HOLDING TANK AND THE SEACOCK FOR SEAWATER INTAKE IS LEFT OPEN WHEN SAILING FOR CONVENIENCE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH USING A VENTED LOOP AND IF SO WHERE SHOULD I INSTALL IT. THANKS

Head aches..

I have a '85 C27 with a Wilcox head. What I do is keep the lever down which closes off the water when not in use..

Should have been Stock

In my opinion, a vented loop should have been a stock installation. I have a 1985 Catalina 27 std rig with traditional layout. After one particularly bad incident in 1989, I both rebuilt the toilet mechanism (involved disassembly and replacement of all the rubber parts) and added a vented loop. The loop was installed behind the sink and cabinet in the head and at it's highest point, is just below the stbd rubrail. Not a single problem of seawater entry or holding tank backup since. Another answer which is probably more proper/seaworthy is to always close the seacocks when underway (or not aboard the boat), but frankly it is really a pain in the backside to access the valve and it remains open during most times.

Rarely open seacock

I also have a an '85, 27 with a Wilcox head. Opening the seacock is a hassle so I just keep it closed most of the time. I just put some water in the sink prior to flushing. Works great, and is safe.
