Does the holding tank vent hose need to be sanitation hose or will hardware store tubing suffice?

I use sanitation hose because I KNOW there's bad odors and even solid "materials" sometimes as high as the vent inside the hose. I have also seen them come from the factory with nothing but vinyl reinforced hose which seems totally inadequate.

Sanitation hose. The cheap hose from the HW store will permeate in a few days and your boat will stink.

I did that once as a temporary measure because I did not have access to sanitation hose. It was a necessary and unfortunate choice. As soon as I could get real sanitation hose, I replaced it.

If your vent line run is straight enough, consider using PVC pipe for it, with short pigtails of hose on either end. The type of hose won't matter as much.

I've had problems in the past with both Trident and Shields 148-series VAC hose like you bought permeating quickly. I don't know why Trident and Shields market these hoses as "sanitation".

Sanitation hose, like many products, was an evolving technology. Flexible PVC #148 was the first sanitation hose--and the only one--until the mid '90s when SeaLand Technology introduced their OdorSafe and Trident began introducing hoses that are more permeation resistant, culminating in their double-walled rubber 101/102 hoses that were the best until Raritan introduced their Sani-Flex. Flex pvc #148 is still acceptable for use as vent line and flush water intake line.
