It is more narrow that the ones I have seen available on the market.brbr

When I rebuilt the engine access, I put small cleats on the
underside of the step, eliminating the need for the barrel bolts.
The ones I had were cut down from std. parts.

Hi,

THis might seems completly crazy but what would you think about installing a
bow truster on a Vega to ease the manoeuver in difficult wind condition or
restreint space?

Thank you!

Hi

Waste of time, money and effort. Manoeuvering comes with practice and
understanding what/where you Vega will point. All you need is a bit of
confidence in close quarters. When I sailed my first Vega I was
terrified as I took 17 attempts to get out of a marina berth but always
first time now!

Cheers

Hi Steve.

I'm sure you are right about bow thruster but I'm willing to bet that if
you reverse out with a good breeze on your beam your bow blows downwind no
matter what was intended?

That's assuming you haven't cheated and used warps or friendly passers
by :) - there are days when that's the only way I can get out when I'm
sailing solo..

all the best,

Warps aint cheating, crew aint cheating, using anything at your disposal
aint cheating.

# 1 I don't think you could find one that small. # 2 It would eat up so much battery power you'd need to install an extra battery & # 3 It wouldn't give you as much extra maneuvering as having an outboard on the stern, even a 4 horse o/b would spin you around like a top!
Once you cut a huge hole in your boat it'll be there forever!!!! Think twice.

I wouldn't worry about a bow thruster: I have 4 barges
waiting for me when I come near my slip- 1 at the bow, 1 at
the stern, and the other 2 on the sides, and they get me
into the slip with my eyes closed.
Just kidding!

Hi Pat - not sure what to make of your reply.

It didn't seem very friendly.

Should I be offended?

Hi John:
I can feel your frustration when the boat goes to other way
and not the way you would like her to go. But there are
ways to help in these situations: When the wind blows into
the slip- no problem. Keep the stern line on until you're
ready to back out. When the wind wants to blow you out of
the slip, run the prop in reverse (idle should do), untie
the boat and with the last one again the stern line, then
rev-up the engine (reverse) and hope for the best. If the
stern still falls off the wrong side, so what! Go the
"wrong" side" until you have enough room to go forward
where you have steerage. The hardest way to get out of a
slip is when the wind comes off the side, but again, don't
fight it! Once again, if there's enough room, go forward
and you're done. But if your boat happens to be in the
wrong direction (for out), rev up the engine (in reverse)
and you'll get enough steerage to get the boat where you
want to go.
I sail almost 100% single handed; I'm in a quite narrow
channel and often have to back the boat out for some 300
Yards. And I never hit anybody. I suggest you put a marker
somewhere outside where you don't bother anybody, and then
learn to back to that marker- from about some 100 feet, and
from any side! You'll be surprised how much you can learn
about your boat- with nobody looking at you when you make
mistakes!
Good Luck..... Wilhelm, V-257

Hi All

Lessons now available at very reasonable cost in Fareham on how to crash
your Vega whilst parking. Ponttons are just an extra method of braking,
dont worry.

PS Bring your own Vega as I dont want to dent mine!!

Hi all,

Does an extra rudder at the stern help?

I started making one but it turned out to be quite heavy and I'm reshaping
it this winter. Hope it will work.

Kind regards,

All,

After the discussion on bow thrusters and backing out of a slip, I was
wondering about experiences backing into a slip - thus making leaving
easier.

In my experience in other boats I found backing in relatively easy,
especially since the end where I was located happened to be the first end to
near the dock - thus giving me more "hand-on" control and allowing me to get
onto the dock with the line I led aft from the bow.

Thanks

Hi John,
give it a try, you'll be surprised how good a Vega backs
up. You just have to get her going! By the way- I wouldn't
back into a slip because if you make a mistake, there's
much less room to recover. Besides, it's not nice to hit
the boat next door....? And all that talk about ores and
2nd rudders, sounds like a joke.
Another good tip for heading into the slip; tie up with the
stern line, but let the engine running (at idle speed, or
if you have a variable pitch prop, at the lowes ahead
speed)that will keep the boat against the side where the
stern line is. Then go forward and tie the boat. Stop the
engine when the bow is tied up.
