Tomfoolery

I don't really want to spend alot of US $$$$$ to buy an acrylic hatch for my Cat 30 just to let in some light - has anyone out there made a cut out in the vberth hatch and covered it with plexiglass/acrylic ?

Why?

...let the light in? It's a lot easier to sleep later when it's not shining on your eyes. Stu

I've heard of it being done

Tomfoolery, I've heard of someone taking a piece of acrylic (don't know what kind), and in a large, low temp oven, letting the acrylic slowly bend/melt down over the shape of the factory hatch. From there they used a router to cut out the proper sized hole. Don't know how it was fastened. Hope this helps.

Great Upgrade

I bit the bullet and bought the acrylic hatch! One of the best upgrades I've done. Adds alot of light inside without being too bright. The angle of the sun has never allowed for a problem sleeping. Is it perfect? No! I wish it had better placement for the hinges, but it really updates the look of my 30!

Speaking of hatches

My hatches above the head and passage to the vee berth are sometimes a problem when tacking. When tacking with the 150% genoa, the sheets sometimes get caught between the deck and the hatch. The hatches are closed tight. The problem is that there is a "v" created by the hatch and deck flanges that acts like a cleat. Sometimes I have to go forward to release the sheets. Has anyone else had this problem and what can be done? This is an 84 C30 we bought last year and have been sailing with the genoa this summer. I don't recall having any problems with the 110% jib. Maybe I will find the best technique in tacking that will reduce the chances of getting caught. i keep trying different things like thighting the windward sheet to keep it off the deck just before tacking. Any thoughts?

try running a line

from the port to starboard life line to keep the sheets off the deck and above the hatch.
