Planning to sail to Glacier Bay through the summer in a 340. Any experiences and gear suggestions for inside passage or the charlottes?

Inside

Check out the latest issue of 48 North. Good article about the "inside" inside passage.

Excellent book

Not sure if it's still in print, and even better, I'm not completely sure of the title. Something like How to Cruise to Alaska Without Rocking the Boat. The author owneed a trawler and figured a route calm enough to keep his wife happy.

North to Alaska

Hi Stu, Personally have not been North of Desolation Sound so take this for what it's worth. But I've talked to a lot of people who have and am planning an eventual trip up in my H335 so have done a lot reading etc. Some thoughts: 1. Couple of books: Don Douglas, Exploring the Inside Passage to Alaska; Charlie's Charts North to Alaska 2. Ground tackle: A damned good anchor maybe CQR 35 lbs and lots of chain and rope rode; also plenty of extra line for a stern line and a mechanism to deploy 3. Heater; it's gonna be cold. How will you heat the boat at anchor and what will be the power drain to run the heater. 4. Closing in the cockpit; you are going to get rained on a lot in the cold; it might be good to explore a spray dodger that encloses the cockpit. 5. Take all the spares with you you think you'll need because you'll have trouble finding them up north. 6. Prepare yourself to be self sufficient on the boat with repairs etc. 7. Electronics; I wouldn't go North without radar; gps, electronic charts and redundancy It should be a wonderful trip. Keep us posted. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi

Boat Show

If you can get down to the Boat Show in Seattle, 1/17-1/26, they'll be having some seminars about going north. You'll most likely beable to get an autographed copy of the guides you'll need. Check out 48north.com for schdule.

Trip Information

Don - I've recently made the Alaska trip and also went to the Charlottes in our H-35. They're both really great destinations and I've got lots of information and experiences to share. You can send me an email via the Hunter Owners list on this web site starting from the main page.
