V-berth mattress??????

I am a liveaboard and sleep pretty well on the cushions that came with the boat. I was wondering about purchasing a real mattress for the v-berth. Anybody know of or where this can be done and is it very costly. Thank you for any help. I live in southern california.

Look in the back of a recent issue of Lats & Atts. I know they use a "real" mattress on their boat & swear by it. There's usually an ad in their Marketplace/Classified section for the company who made theirs. BTW, I understand they are pretty costly but the comfort can't be beat!LaDonna

v-berth mattress

I went to a local mattress factory and brought in my old v-berth cushions as patterns. I had them cut me new ones out of 6 inch foam. They had two types hard and softer. I selected the softer type. I then just covered them with an extra beed sheet and it made a world of difference. I now seep better on the boat than I do at home. I believe the foam cost around 90 or 100 bucks. Money well spent!

Futon

I don't remember where, but I read an article about replacing the v-berth cushions with a modified futon. I don't remember if it was custom made or owner modified. They're available in different grades and firmness just like a mattress and it seems that they would be more economical than a custom made mattress. They also would lend themselves easily to owner modification of a stock size. They are also very comfortable to sleep on.
