Has anyone tried or seen in action the new Doyle Utility Ppwer Sail (UPS)? It is suppose to cover a wide range of wind conditions and angles with few hassles. It could be an ideal sail for B&R rigs.

YES I OWN ONE

I have a Hunter 33.5 and have flown the ups on it several of times. Its a light air sail (up to around 8knots)and will point extremely well, about 55 degrees off the wind. Down wind it can flown in much higher conditions. The nice thing about it, it can be install on a roller furling useing just the drum. This allows tacking and gibing very easly.

Good Marketing

The Utility Power Sail is good Marketing. Essentially it is what everyone else has been calling a Drifter for the past 20 years. It has just been given a new name. It is not exclusive to Doyle.

Own a drifter too! not the same!

UPS vs Drifter: I also own a 155 drifter and yes they do appear to be the same, but if you were to lay one on top of the other the ups luff and leach or more rounded much like a shoot, which is great for a run. In to the wind, once sheeted in it acts like a 155. Hard to explain you have to experience it!

So far, so good

We have a 29.5 Hunter and purchased the Doyle UPS at the winter Sail Expo, in Atlantic City. We were sent the wrong size furling drum. Once replaced, we have had a few great sails on a beam reach and a broad reach. The best feature is the furling system and ease of tacking. It's nice to have a beautiful, colorful sail as part of our inventory.

DRIFTING/DETAILS

I started this thread and now I'm tangled and confused! First-howdy Maverick, did you ever get that 155? Now on to the UPS. 1. If it furls, does it furl on the jib/genoa furler or do you put a second furler out in front of the jib furler? 2. If it is only good up to 8 knots, and it goes on the jib furler, I assume you have to be prepared to bag it, and come out with your standard jib/genoa for winds from 8-20 (unless you are going downwind?)? 3. What is the material-spinnaker weight or jib weight? Good work guys. lets keep this going. Maybe we can start a point/counter point with Doyle UPS personnel vs. The Drifters! Jane! You $#@&%$...

Drifter? Gennaker? Code Zero? Screecher?

Call it what you want.... loose luffed drifter, furling drifter, Utility Furling Sail, Screecher, Code Zero ..... they are all good marketing for the same thing to work as a light air headsail to make you boat move in less that 8 knots of wind .... the other solution is to use the Cast Iron Genoa which is flown below decks..... basically the sail we are discussing is a cross bwteen a conventional drifter flown in the roller furling foil and a cruising spinnaker it is designed flatter than an cruising spinnaker, fuller than a drifter, has a positive luff and leech while a drifter has a straight luff and negative leech and it is flown on a loose luff using a roller furling unit to ease hoisting and lowering.... the product became popular in Scandinavia about 4 years ago... the down side is that nylon doesnt like being furled so there is a good chance of stretching the base material faily easily.... I have been selling and servicing sails for 15 years...

Yep, you can

They're in the store under sails and rigging, of course. It's the busy season for sailmakers so lead times aren't quick, but I doubt you'll find a UPS for less moneyanywhere else.

Cruising chutes etc. use a sock instead of furling

UPS SAILS

THE UPS SAIL IS NOT A DRIFTER OR A GENNAKER---THE GIRTH IS MUCH FULLER- AND IT IS ON A ROLLER FURLER-AND HAS A KEVLAR LINE IN THE LUFF THAT IT ROLLS UP ON. ALL THAT IS NEEDED IS A SPARE HALYARD..FOR MORE INFO CONTACT tjackson@atlantic.net

regarding using a sock on chutes

Alex-the ups is not a cruising chute- it is much more-you can point with this sail-as to furling-pull one line "from" the cockpit and it is rolled up..for more info email me at tjackson@atlantic.net

The Doyle UPS

The UPS IS different from a drifter. the positive roach develops more power up wind in light air, more area for downwind. Stows easier than a cruising Spin. Easy to set , and better Utility sail for the new Hunters that have only a stock small jib. The Free Luff Furler allows you to roll the sail to Tack or Jibe and stow, but not to reef.
