Using Vinegar in the Head . . .

. . . with an aluminum holding tank? I have a 1992 H28 with an aluminum holding tank. The tank seems to be doing fine, so far (no leaks or corrosion). I have been using KO and CP faithfully, however, I have not been adding the cup of vinegar when I close up for the week. Is the use of vinegar OK with an aluminum holding tank? Are there any other things I should be doing that are unique to an aluminum holding tank? Thanks.

Vinegar won't hurt an aluminum tank

It will prevent sea water mineral buildup in the head dicharge hose. 10 years is about the max lifespan for an aluminum tank, though...so you need to keep a close eye on it for signs of leakage. If you should see any soon after you start flushing a cupful of vinegar through, don't blame the vinegar...vinegar is not corrosive.

But a note of caution

It was Peggie who alerted me that vinegar will destroy any lubricant you have in the pump. May not need vinegar if you use KO and CO per her instructions. Works for me just fine.

I never said that...

I dunno who told you vinegar destroys lubricant...but it wasn't me...and it won't. I said don't leave vinegar sitting in the bowl...'cuz if the joker valve soaks in vinegar for an extended period it'll swell up and distort. Neither K.O. nor C.P will dissolve sea water minerals, either. They're both bio-active (bacteria/enzymes) products that have no more effect on mineral buildup than the bacteria in waste.
