I've just purchased a 1987 Catalina and am interested in the USCG documentation. Has anyone documentated a catalina 27. I ran the number through a net tonage calculation and got back a Gross and Net five tons. However i was not sure about the depth number and used 5.5 feet. thanks

Documentation

I ran the numbers for a C27 through the net tonnage calculator and came up with only 3 net tons. Question...What is the upside to having a vessel documented?

I was told 28 feet is the limit

but the regs do spec tonnage. I am sure if you pay a doc comapny they get it done. It cost about $500.

My '94 C270 is documented and has been since

new. Coasties use some kind of formula of their own that comes up with some kind of displacement figure. I was a little surprised when I first looked at it also because I didn't think a 27 could be documented. Call the documentation center, they are pretty good about returning them. Here the main "advantage" is that you don't need to register with the state & therefore maintain numbers & sticker on the bow. Also free to renew as opposed to small annual state fee. Not much really, some lenders require documentation because they think it better proof of a clear title with no liens against the boat. Not sure how true that is, could depend on the state or it's just easier for the lender to deal with only the feds and not each state DMV or whatever.

C-27 Documentation

My C-27 was documented when I bought it. I sent the USCG Vessel documentation center about $80 and got a new documentation certificate in a few weeks. It was really easy and the CG website has pretty good instructions. Fair winds, Matt
