I've been looking to upgrade from a 22 to a 27 and I've noticed that there are a lot more Catlaina 27 for sale than Hunters ,Odey's, Etc any thoughts on this.

Catalina 27

There are probably a lot more Catalina 27s on the water than the other models. Catalina had a very long production run of the 27s, as they tend to do with most of their models. I think they made about 6,000 of the 27s. Hunter, O'Day, and other manufacturers seem to change their models and styling more frequently. Nothing against them, just a different approach. With that many C 27s on the water, there are bound to be a bunch for sale at any given time. I've got an 84 Catalina 27 with the Universal Diesel and wheel steering. It's been a superb boat. We use it primarily for daysails (coastal NJ) and an occasional overnighter or weekend. Older boats with outboard motors can be had very inexpensively, while the later versions command a bit more money. Either way, you are getting a lot of boat for the money. Whatever you look at have it surveyed for trouble spots. Good luck, Randy

Its in the numbers.

John, Caalina has built/sold over 6,500 Catalina 27s. I am sure that all the other boats you mention combined do not equal this number. The Catalina 27 for its size is a great boat.

Upgrading

Catalina'a are great boats. Maybe it's just the supurb level of support options, although the approx 6,600 C27's produced makes it much easier to find spare parts. Not only can you still call Catalina Yachts directly and get support for a 21yr old boat (my 1985 C27), but they also have Mainsheet Magazine with a tech article in each issue for each Catalina model. There are also online support groups like the link I have included below that cater specifically to C27 owners. There is also an intl association website, but seems to have fallen by the wayside over the years. Approx 80% of their links are broken last time I checked. Going from a C22 to a C27 makes perfect sense and I would do the same thing. You should have no trouble selling your C22 if she is in decent shape.

Just a thought

I did the same and went from a 22' to a 27'. If you can afford it go ahead and get a 30'. After 2 years I wish I did.
