Well, just about everything I've tried has fallen along the wayside. Garmin will not respond to anything but the six foot cable. Guess the majority of installs are on power boats and don't need anything longer. Three companies I've contacted have not had the cable or missunderstood the requirement. AtoZ Industries, I thought was going to come through but only sent a single wire. Guys I need twelve of these! So being a true sailboat owner - I scavenged some computer cable from work. You remember that stuff called shielded twisted pair serial cable. That will do the job. Picture shows the rear port transom bulkhead, one frame is of the electronics mounted on white board that will be mounted to the transom. Out of focus picture of the cable. Wiring is a mess for now, this morning I fired everything up and updated the software for the 3010. Now I will splice in the wire from Garmin's short cable and be prepared to run the wires. Having fun :) Jim S/V Java

Good job Jim.

I did not see your original post but am suprised that longer cables are not available. You probably saved a hundred bucks with your solution though. I have the opposite problem. The cable on my new 172C is too long. I plan to daisy the ground and 12v wires off of the back of the Nexus instrument in the pod. It will hurt to cut that cable down to twelve inches or so.

Thanks Ed,

Me being a pack rat, don't throw the extra cable away. You will find a need for it later. Got the same problem with the GPS17 they sent it along with about 30ft of cable and I only need about 3ft. With all of the sex inducing emails I get, I was wondering if I could slip a pill to the power/data cord to lenghten it. ;D Jim S/V Java

I installed their fish finder, chopped the wires..

to extend it with the six foot extension ... and found that their extension cord wire colors ... and their wire colors coming out of the plug-in cord made for the unit were partially DIFFERENT. So I had to test the plug-in plug ... mark the pin numbers on each wire and match up the different colors based on pin number. This is to get it to work with the GPS162 and the fishfinder 160. Of course I violated the guarantee, but so far five years later no problems with the fish finder. I think the red and blacks were ok ... was just the other colors that were screwed up. Vic "Seven"
