Update on using a Kayak for a tender

Oh, yeah, one more thing… Greenlanders build tiny little kayaks for their kids. And they tie soda bottles to a cross beam mounted behind the cockpit for outriggers. Get 'em kayaking early!

Here's an expensive version: http://store.triaksports.com/products/triak-p1 I bet it would be kinda difficult to get it up next to the boat to get out. Or store on deck.

storing them on deck is the issue here folks, nice pic btw but onward. we have two kayaks (the fiance and i) that we bought to fish out of and for hypothetical tenders for our 1980 h27t we lived on at the time, never used them as tenders before we moved up to the 33 and now im worried about putting them on deck since its shaped differently, on the 27 they fit snugly between the shrouds and the coach roof but now they wont since the 33 has inboard chainplates and a low profile cabin top. what if a wave comes quartering off the bow and catches the underside of the leward yak? if it takes the stanchions off then it will compromize the saftey of the whole vessel, an inflatable air floor dinghy would be down below or strapped to the hand rails in front of the mast deflated and in its bag where it would shrug off a cresting wave like a turtle. so, i would ask why you would bring along a yak as a tender? as a mooring service vessel sure but as a tender stored on deck i am worried its just not safe.

seems someone is going to have an issue with whatever you chose :D. Oh well... I like small outboards but when you put an outboard on a tender, it now has to be registered (gas or electric) and Im already registering three boats...

Ive been kayaking a lot longer than sailing (not as serious as Brian S - who’s pictures I have been enjoying) and just like to paddle.. even a sit on top Kayak.. Some pictures of all the odd ball things I’ve towed behind the sailboat. Another thing about the sit on top kayak - they never fill with water after a long tow..

Most fun thing to bring along is the Hobie AI.. but the Amas make it a pain to get on and off the boat.

Walt, I LOVE your towing setup for the 3 kayaks! That's awesome!

I started out with a plastic sea kayak, a Perception Shadow at 16.5' long, thinking I'd do a lot of camping in it. Well, only 3 times. Then I started going to a kayak symposium, and I got in with a bunch of folks from http://www.qajaqusa.org

That led me down the "build it yourself" route, especially the idea that you build your kayak to fit you. Now I can't paddle store bought 'yaks. I'm thinking about a skin on frame stand up paddle board next.

There are some truly wonderful pictures in the galleries. http://www.qajaqusagallery.org/gallery/main.php I've taught at the Delmarva Paddler's Retreat, the South Sound Traditional and Inuit Kayak Symposium, and the Hudson River Greenland Festival in the past. Kinda unfortunately, I haven't attended any in the past 3 or 4 years, because I've gotten back into sailing. This weekend is the Hudson River Greenland Festival, but it's also the big summer picnic for the sailing club. Since they made me an officer in the club (why'd they have to go and do THAT?), I kinda should make an appearance. :D Oh, well, enjoy the pictures!
