That is one I'd like to see videos of, Rufus ! That thing may have been burning the sawdust from the plywood shredding into the blower.. remember that he first diesels ran on coal dust for fuel ..
a quick force calculation says that a 2" opening with a full vacuum on one side would generate 47 pounds of force trying to suck the plug in..
A 6" opening like on a big diesel would generate 424 pounds something to be reckoned with !

Wouldn't hurt to use Marvel Mystery Oil as your soaking fluid. I think it was RichH who wrote a post about this and the proper way to GENTLY pull motor through after a long soak. Maybe someone could direct us to it. Good luck Zee!

no video unfortunately, it happened out on a random oklahoma oil drilling site my dad was working on at the time, when the plywood went thru the engine he grabbed some bolt cutters that were handy in the truck bed and jumped up on the top of the engine and started clipping the injector lines until it stopped, i think he said he hit 4-5 out of 8 before it started to slow at all, yes the blower made very nice sawdust for the motor to burn for a bit. close to this same time they had an engine come apart completely and the investigation turned up a wild story about oil starvation causing the bearings to swell and lock up to the crank journals for a bit then seized in the crankshaft cradles and shattered the block as well as the crankshaft, 3 of 8 pistons went up with the heads and valves (8v engine with individual heads) and the rest wend through the bottom and sides, flywheel departed the motor and took off across the property, 1 or 2 unfortunate souls were in the way, not pretty.

That one that ran away here on the hill, just for the record the owner was the only one involved in this cranking/meltdown. The black smoke was coming from the exhaust hose that had burned through, evidently not enough water. I really haven't looked at it, I ain't got no dog in that fight.
Yet.

so we built a wrench fro the crankshaft bolt only to shear the well worn woodruff key.
our next step is walkabout for parts, as we go for a head gasket and a woodruff key or three.....
the fun of dealing with used to me engines, as all gets to be redone so i can still keep on..lol is a good challenge, and parts are not hard to find here so far.
we will take had in to machine shop for examination as we dont know if head is true.
might as well rebuild in full at this point.
our goal is mobility by dec so i can exit marina for the anchorage thus effect much more extensive repairs than i am able to do in marina.

Yay!

And I can't wait to hear about the repairs you'll be performing at anchor, too. ;)

You will be writing about these, yes?

only stufff done at dockside was irrelevant stuff..all important and difficult stufff on my boat has been done on mooring or at anchor..last engine transfer was on a mooring, 2009, san diego, thankyou, nice n easy fro helping on that!!!
this rebuild is majorly on land..machinist, at any rate, and rest in boat on anchor....they cannot promise me less than 22 cents per foot per day per month, so i will remain out here until they promise me that plus no neighbors..lol means summertime in marina and winter, or high season, at anchor. including packing gland work for prop and rudder shafts....many projects are actually easier to do at anchor than at dockside..

yáll gotta KNOW i aint gonna be silent about this..lol....immobile since june..now finally promise of mobility is beyond happy dance.....

geeez i WISH i had the pix i saw yesterday of ka lunks interior....wholly schwartzes boatmon...there were only cam and crank, block and head in decent enough shape to reuse....EVERYTHING was twisted and torn adn destroyed. so i now kno0w why BOOM is better than silence... wow...
and so it goes towards finishing....
referred a gringo for engine work, i got some dough of f final pricing thank gods and everyone (kisses sky) and now total is down to:
4000
4000
14000
with 6000 left to pay on delivery.
at 12.5 pesos to one us dollar, do the math..is a BRAND NEW engine when i receive it early to mid may...then we do tank build..lol...should be a kick.......

clift notes version....WHOOOOOT!!!! engine by mid may..lol when i am already in the marina for summer, so is gonna be easier to install..omg, dont know if i can stand that...something easier to do for a change..lol

Darn, I'd like to see the pics, too.

Lessee, 4,000 plus 4,000 plus 14,000 plus 6,000. Is that correct?

numerically, yes...

as for the pix...imagine post apocolyptic meltdown pix wherein EVERYTHING is torn, twisted, and they throw in a mangled whitestone bridge for grins and giggles.....
was worse.

but there was no lipping on pistons nor scoring of cylinders....

most impressive engine fail shots i ever saw in my life, and i saw a few dozen.....lol some of which i successfully accomplished meself....this is beyond gold medal....
