On another thread we were discussing emergency stuffing box hose repairs. I chimed in with the fact that a professional Captain I hired insisted I buy a bike inner tube. He said they are very useful for patching hose leaks, etc...which why I brought it up in the context of that post.

It gave me the idea for this post. What unusual item do YOU always carry for just such an emergency? Come on sailors...there must be some wild stuff on board your boats that you just will not leave the dock / mooring without.

'fess up...it will be cathartic and fun I promise. Maine Sail should be good for at least a half dozen things I will have to go out an buy.

Duct tape & wd40

If it moves and shouldn't = duct tape
If it doesn't move and should = wd40

Seriously though, duct tape is some good stuff and wd40 has tons of uses you would never think of, like, removing silicon caulking. It is about the only thing I have found that would ever loosen silicon. Come to think of it, wd40 is even the best thing to remove the residue from your duct tape.

3M makes a type of Extreme Tape

Fantastic stuff. Anywhere you used electrical tape before (spreader boots, etc) use this stuff. It doesn't come loose and look like hell at the end of the sailing season. Also works on pipe leaks - you name it.
Phil - you should stock some.

If it doesn't move and should

then use PB Blaster, far superior to Liquid Wrench, and forget about WD40, it's not really very useful (pardon the skipper who mentioned it, but try PB Blaster before you chuck your WD40, and then you will chuck it!:))

PB Blaster

The only thing about PB Blaster is that it absolutely will remove paint. I used it on my newly painted coupling...painted with Eastwood Rust Blocker epoxy too 24 hours earlier...took it RIGHT off. It also removed the "permanent" marker I had marked to index the coupling halves.

JB weld saved my butt when the nylon packing nut failed in deep water on a sat. night at Inner Harbor. Where would you go to keep from sinking at Inner Harbor?

Nerf football

I actually don't carry one, but think I will. Fun to play with in the water, and a salvage diver told me it works great to plug holes of all sizes.

In addition to the "usual suspects"

one normally carries for emergencies (i.e., tools/tapes/sprays etc), I once sailed as part of a delivery crew on a 42-footer. The professional captain who asked me to come along always brought --- you ready for this? --- a bunch of his wife's old panty hose on every trip he made. Over the years, he told me that he used the old panty hose for (1) making a temporary fan belt; (2) using it for a tournequet when a crewman got cut somehow, and mostly (3) to wrap around fuel hoses to filter fuel when taking on fuel at suspect ports. I now carry panty hose in my tool locker....

Suture material, and a skin stapler

Along with tools and spare parts to fix the boat if we are more than 10 hours from an ER we need to be able to fix our selves. A laceration can not be sewn together after about 12 hours.
