I was wondering if a 32 amp AMG West Marine starter battery be enough for the M25-XP in southern California. This battery is about half the size and weight compare to a West Marine 55 amp starter battery. I’m going to tie the two existing batteries together for the house bank and add a small starter battery next to it. My 1990 Catalina 28 didn't come with the engine manuals and I'm also fighting for room down below. Beside I have bad shoulders, but I’ll go with whatever it needs!! Thanks JOHN

CCA

John I guess my post got lost in the glitch on Tuesday. It's not the battery amp hours you need to know, it's the CCA, cold cranking amps. In cold weather it's harder to start an engine. Starting an engine uses only a few amp hours. In your So. Cal. weather, this may not be an issue for you. I recommend that you install a glow plug solenoid to reduce the amount of time you have to hold the glow plug button in, and check the CCA of the battery you are thinking of buying. Also, you don't need to hold the glow plug button in when you hit start. In fact it's better to release it. The engine manual is wrong - see the C34 Tech Section in the last one or two Mainsheets. I bought a 60 ah marine start battery 3 years ago and it's still going strong. There's no reason a 32 ah battery wouldn't work. Your idea to parallel your two existing batteries and get a new starting battery is a very good one. If you need an engine manual, why not find one online? The link explains the solenoid. Stu
