My 2in heat exchanger on my Universal M-18 is having a hard time keeping up with the warm Florida seawater. I would like to put in a 3in. Anybody have a good source for these? MDD wants $362+shipping and I would like to do a little better than that.

Re: Heat Exchanger

Have you checked the exhaust flange for build up of carbon? I just overhauled the cooling system on my M25 and it runs at 165 in Fl.

Not really

Harold, so far I have cleaned the strainer outside the hull, cleaned the strainer inside the boat, checked the line (wire wrapped) from the strainer to the pump, changed the pump, changed the line from the pump to the heat exchanger, cleaned the exchanger with muratic acid. As for the mixing elbow, I ran a piece of #10 solid wire down the water inlet and did not feel anything. Do I need to take the elbow completely off the check it? FWIW, back during the winter when the sea water was cooler, I could run 2,600 all day and not heat up.

heat exchanger

I purchased 1987 c27. Had overheating problems did the following: 1. took off heat exchanger and had boiled out by local radiator shop. it's a pain but worth it 2. my hot water heater was in bad shape, so I took the entire unit out and by-passed it!! NO more overheating--sometimes developes(sp) an air lock in hot water heater. No problems since, replace zinc while heat exchanger is off.. R. Hulet SV Ataraxy

Heat Exchanger Continued

Does your 27 have a hot water heater cut out valve between the heat exchanger and the heater? If so go to the link and check the archives for overheating.

Try Lenco in Louisiana

I have the same problem with the M-18 in my 1984 C-30. I am looking at a 3" exchanger from Lenco in Lousiana. I think they are at www.lencocoolers.com. They quoted me $225.00 (I think) for a 3" replacement.
