What HP diesel was standard on the 1987 Catalina 30? I am looking to buy one, and am wondering if the 2 cycle or 3 cycl would be better. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

engine HP

I have an 85 Catalina 27, with a 14 HP (Universal model 18). I believe the 30 had a Universal model 20 (18 HP)

87 Catalina 30

I have an '87 Catalina 30. It has a Universal 25XP engine which is a 3 cylinder. The engine horsepower is nominally 23 HP. I find it to be a very smooth running engine with less vibration and noise than the one or two cylinder models.

Universal 25

Columbine, 5153, 1988 model C-30, has fine Universal 25 engine. Good remarks heard from other Universal 25 owners.

Universal 18 ... 14 HP

I am looking at the spec sheet for a 1988 Catalina 30, Standard Equipment has the Model 18 with 14 HP. The upgrade is the Model 25 wich is 23 HP. It would be interesting to know how many 87-88 were built with the M 25 and how many had the M 18?

I have the M-18 in a 7,000# 28footer and....

it performs flawlessly. I would love to have the 3 cylinder so we could water ski! anyway, I would reccomend the bigger engine in a Catalina 30. You never read any gripes about having too big an engine in a sailboat. Good Luck

M-18 is fine on fresh water

We have an '84 with the M-18, and it's fine for here on the lake, but I would definately want the bigger engine on salt water. We just don't have anything like the seas, the current or the tides you have to contend with on salt water.

M-18 - 14 HP in #4732

I have an 87 Catalina 30. It has the M-18 Universal which is rated at 14 HP. I cruise the Tampa Bay area and have found myself at a standstill against the seas. The 23 HP would have been welcomed in those times. But, the fuel consumption in the 14 HP is almost nonexistent. At hull speed, I can get about 22 miles under the keel with a gallon of fuel. I don't know anything about the consumption with the 23 HP, but in the balance, I'm satisfied with the 14. Fair Winds... Bill SV Eagle's Nest
