Recently purchased a Cataline 27 with a M-15 Universal diesel engine. It has been a northern MN fresh water boat now going into Texas salt water service. Is a fresh water conversion kit available? Know of several websites offering Atomic 4 conversions, can they be modified?

Gene, My M-15/5411 is 20 years old. All saltwater running. Don't worry about a retrofit kit. Get a fresh water flushing system. It's simple, all you do is flush the engine cooling system with your dock hose. I do it a couple of times a year. The most important thing about a M-15 is ensuring that you maintain your engine operating temperature below 150-160 degrees. Temperatures higher than that causes the salt in the water to scale your cooling system. I reconmend an extra thermostat on board. And after you change it be sure to drain the air from the small plug below the thermostat assembly. Take Care, Chris

Gene, I purchased mine at BoatUS. It's a very simple device. All it does is enable you to connect a water hose on the engine side of the raw water strainer leading to your engine. Unscrew the small plug by the thermostat. Once connected and with the plug removed slowly turn on the water. It doesn't require alot of water pressure. Some people use a salt remover. I don't. Some people use an acid based cleaning material, again I don't. Your not going to get a large build up unless you run your engine hot. If you have any question about this engine please E-mail me at christopher.taylor3@att.net. I have alot of experience on it and will be more than happy to share any information I have. Take Care, Chris
