Changing the raw water pump impeller on this engine in my Catalina 28 MK II requires prying one of the hoses off the raw water pump because the screws on the face plate are not easily accessed. Can anyone suggest ant easier method?

Yes, replace the Sherwood pump with an Oberdorfer pump, which has the screws on the faceplate facing forward.
